The wooden tray in my hands was filled with stuff, making it heavy to carry. I scooted myself through the slightly ajar door into the bedroom. Zero was still in bed and shirtless, waiting patiently with a book in his hand, as he did in the mornings he didn’t rush to have a workout. I had tried my best to wake up before him but it was impossible to leave from his arms without alarming his senses. He loved spooning me and when I even moved an inch away, his hold got tighter. Reluctantly he had let me go from bed to the kitchen this morning, it had required a lot of convincing on my part to have him not join me.
“Happy birthday!” I chanted as I placed the tray in his lap. I had prepared a huge coffee with oat milk and hazelnut syrup, counting the measurements exactly how Zero liked it. I had also made some pastry stuffed with onions and mushrooms, baked a cupcake with too much frosting on it and cutted some fresh fruits.
“Even a candle for me?” he asked as he gently put the book down on the nightstand. A single candle that I had placed on the cupcake had a still strong flame on it, even after the not-so-steady walk.
“You can make a wish”, I said to him and seated myself on the bed. Zero’s strong hand wrapped around the cupcake and he even closed his eyes while blowing the candle, hopefully wishing for something nice. He bit into the cupcake, licking the spilling frosting of his lips before offering a bite for me too. I refused. No need to tell him I had eaten plenty of those to make sure they were perfect in every aspect and also the fridge was filled with a dozen more. It was Min-young’s recipe she had sneaked to me at the New Year's party, when Zero had been looking for something else than me for a second.
“Here, this is for you”, the shyness was a bit too apparent in my tone. A gift I had pondered over too long was now in a black velvet jewellery box and Zero looked at it weirdly in my hand. My voice lowered to a whisper: “It’s nothing much.”
His finger brushed mine. The puzzling look changed to a smile when he opened it. Two pretty hair clips with blue flowers were in his hands while he scanned them properly with his eyes, a content gleam on them.
“They are pretty, thank you”, he finally opened his mouth and clipped his unruly front hair. I loved his slow morning looks, the warmthness and messiness made him glow. Also he smelled alluring, like home, in the mornings. It was hard to explain. I circled my hands around him to breathe him in, to relax against him.
“Tired still?”, he said to my ear as my nose was buried deep in his neck and his hands stroked my open hair. I nodded slightly. “Maybe you should take a longer break from school, you have been exhausted for weeks now.”
“It’s fine. I just need some cuddles and then to know what you want to do for your birthday”, I murmured as Zero grabbed my waist to get me on his lap, to straddle him.
“I have one thing”, his voice was deep, rough, like he was trying to mask his nervousness. My head whipped up to look him in the eyes.
“Huh? You said you had not any wishes for today”, I stated, furrowing my brows as his eyes kept me on my spot. His right hand had disappeared inside the nightstand and his left one smoothed the skin between my brows.
“You. I want you”, he whispered, his eyes were so serious, so darkened. His hand returned between us and my eyes flickered down. It was a jewellery box, similar to the one I had had in my hands just moments ago. Zero opened it and I stopped breathing.
