The morning sun streamed through the tall, arched windows of the Slytherin common room as Aurora Black prepared herself for the day. The events of the previous day still lingered in her mind, but she pushed them aside as she straightened her robes and tied her hair back with a ribbon. Today, she would attend all her classes as usual. She wasn't about to give anyone the satisfaction of seeing her rattled.
As she walked through the corridors of Hogwarts, Aurora could feel the weight of a hundred eyes on her. Whispers followed her wherever she went, students glancing at her with expressions that ranged from fear to curiosity to outright disdain. It was nothing new Aurora was used to the attention but today, it seemed more intense, more focused. She knew why. The incident with Dimitri and Caraxes had spread throughout the school like wildfire.
Her first class of the day was Potions with Professor Snape. The cold, dungeon like classroom was filled with the usual scent of bubbling cauldrons and the low murmur of students preparing their ingredients. Aurora took her usual seat near the front, her expression impassive as she carefully set out her supplies.Millicent, Draco, and Pansy sat nearby, but none of them said a word to her. There was a tension in the air, and Aurora could sense it, though she pretended not to notice.
Professor Snape swept into the room, his black robes billowing behind him like a dark cloud. He began the lesson without preamble, his voice smooth and sharp as he instructed the class on the properties of the Draught of Living Death. Aurora focused intently on her work, carefully measuring out the powdered root of asphodel and adding it to her cauldron. As the potion began to simmer, a faint, purple mist rose from the surface.
Halfway through the lesson, Snape paused and addressed the class. "Before you leave, there is an announcement," he said, his dark eyes sweeping over the students. "As you all know, the Yule Ball will take place on the evening of the 25th of December. It is a tradition that all fourth years and above are expected to attend. I suggest you start preparing now, as it will be a formal event."
The students exchanged glances, the usual excitement that accompanied such announcements rippling through the room. Aurora, however, remained impassive. The Yule Ball was a social event, and while she was no stranger to high society, the idea of mingling with the other houses and pretending to enjoy herself was less than appealing.
As Snape dismissed the class, Aurora gathered her things and slipped out of the dungeon, heading to her next lesson. Throughout the day, the whispers and stares followed her like a shadow. At one point, as she passed a group of Gryffindors in the corridor, she overheard Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger talking in hushed tones.
"She's the one with the dragon," Ron muttered, glancing nervously over his shoulder.
"Yeah," Harry added, his voice low. "She's dangerous. You heard what she did to that Durmstrang boy."
Hermione, ever the voice of reason, whispered, "We don't know the full story. Maybe there's more to it..."
Aurora's eyes narrowed as she caught their words. Turning on her heel, she walked right up to them, her expression cold. "If you have something to say, say it to my face," she hissed, her voice as sharp as a blade.
