The Great Hall was filled with the familiar sounds of chatter, the clinking of cutlery against plates, and the occasional burst of laughter as the students of Hogwarts enjoyed their first meal of the new school year. At the Slytherin table, Aurora Black sat between Daphne Greengrass and Blaise Zabini, her eyes occasionally darting toward Theodore Nott, who was seated across from her. This year, he had been made a Slytherin prefect a fact that had been met with mixed reactions among their friends.

Aurora didn't begrudge Theo the position. In fact, she couldn't think of anyone more suited to the role. His cold demeanor, sharp mind, and unflinching adherence to the rules made him the perfect candidate. Still, it was strange to think of Theo, the boy she'd shared so many rebellious moments with, as an enforcer of order. She wondered how long it would last before he bent the rules to his own advantage.

As the meal drew to a close, the usual anticipation for Dumbledore's start-of-term announcements filled the air. The students quieted down as the headmaster rose to his feet, a serene smile on his face as he surveyed the room. However, before he could even begin to speak, a high-pitched, sickly sweet voice cut through the hall.

"Ahem!"

All eyes turned toward the staff table, where Dolores Umbridge, Senior Undersecretary to the Minister, had stood up from her seat. Dressed in her trademark pink cardigan and adorned with a large, overly ornate bow on her head, she was a jarring contrast to the otherwise dignified professors seated around her.

Aurora's stomach twisted with unease. She recognized Umbridge from the few times she'd seen her at the Ministry, but she hadn't expected the woman to appear here, at Hogwarts.

"Thank you, Headmaster," Umbridge simpered, though her tone made it clear she wasn't asking for permission. "I'm sure you won't mind if I say a few words."

Dumbledore, his smile still in place but with a noticeable edge, gestured for her to proceed. "By all means, Professor Umbridge."

The students exchanged curious glances. It wasn't often that someone interrupted Dumbledore, and even less often that it was tolerated.

Umbridge cleared her throat again, her eyes scanning the room as if she were addressing a group of particularly slow children. "It is the duty of the Ministry of Magic to ensure that young witches and wizards receive the best possible education. Education is the foundation of a strong, secure magical society, and we must ensure that this foundation is built on firm, unchanging principles."

Aurora's attention sharpened. There was something beneath Umbridge's sugary tone, something that hinted at a deeper, more sinister intent.

Umbridge continued, her voice dripping with false sweetness. "Progress for the sake of progress must be discouraged, and reforms should be carefully controlled and understood. We must return to the basics, the tried and true methods that have served our world for centuries."
