"𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐨 𝐰𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐨 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠?" Emiliana grumbled as she sat on one of the barstools in the kitchen, Elizabeth standing behind the kitchen counter.
It was Dan's birthday today and Emiliana had just been informed that she was accompanying her parents to his birthday dinner. She also found out through Nathan that his grandparents are in town. Emiliana hadn't met his grandparents, but she could only imagine how intense they are.
"Because your dad and Dan have been good friends since high school. It's only right that we're there," Elizabeth shrugged.
"Okay, fine. But what does that have to do with me?" she asked.
"Well, after the stunt you pulled at the beach house the other day, I think attending a birthday dinner is a good start," Elizabeth remarked.
Emiliana stayed silent, trying to come up with an argument. "Fair enough. But still, are you aware that that place is like the house of horrors right now? Mr and Mrs Scott aren't speaking and Nate quit basketball, which is worse than death in Dan's world."
"I know what's going on right now. I'm gonna be there for Deb, your dad's gonna be there for Dan and you're gonna be there for Nathan. Does that work for you?"
"Yeah, I guess," she shrugged. "So what are Nate's grandparents like?"
"May is a nice lady. Royal, however, is like Dan," Elizabeth chuckled. "And keep in mind, they're friends with your grandparents."
Emiliana winced. Elizabeth's parents, Francesca and Harold Chilton, were the definition of snobby rich. Even Emiliana was slightly frightened by them. Especially Francesca's judgement over pretty much anything.
"That's terrifying," Emiliana grimaced. "But then again, no one's worse than Nanny Franny and grandpa."
"Speaking of, be prepared for a visit. I'd say they'll be stopping by at any point now. They haven't been here in almost six months."
"Do you promise this time you won't hide in the linen closet drinking chardonnay while they were interrogating me about not wanting to go to Yale?" Emiliana asked, reminiscing on the dinner from hell.
Elizabeth shrugged. "Can't guarantee anything."

"You sure we can't still give them this?" Emiliana asked as she examined the now ruined pie that she had just accidentally dropped.
When she had gotten out of the car, while holding the box containing the pie, Emiliana bumped into her mother, dropping the box in the process. The box had opened up and the pie crumbled from landing first on the driveway. It was still in the box, despite touching the ground, but it was in bad shape.
