Chapter 43: Someone in the Dark

"Golurk," the giant Golurk locked on Ash and May. "Golurk!" Golurk yelled in anger.

"Run!" Ash and company made a break for it.

"You don't have to tell me twice," May bolted. The Pokémon also followed.

"Luuuuuuurk!" Golurk ran after them. Its heavy feet made everything in the room shake.

"Through that door!" Ash saw an exit near Golurk.

"Gooooooooooo!" Golurk may have been sizable, but it was too slow to prevent their exit.

Ash held the door for the others, "Go, go, go!" Ash didn't look back once they were out. "Keep going, guys," Ash knew this wasn't the end of the pursuit. Sure enough, the wall near the door burst after Golurk bashed through.

May whined, "Of course, it would do that!"

"Goluuuuurk!" Golurk's rage allowed it to increase its speed. It was on the group's heels as it smashed through everything between it and Ash and May. To slow them down, Golurk unleashed a dual Shadow Punch.

May looked back, "Blaziken, Liepard, stop that attack!"

"Pikachu, Snivy, you too!" Ash countered.

Their Pokémon stopped fleeing to confront the incoming Ghost-type attack. It wasn't hard to counter, but Golurk was gone when the smoke cleared. "Where did it go?" the coordinator expected to see it.

Suddenly, Golurk manifested before their Pokémon. "Golurk!" Golurk used one slap to knock them out of the way. The four Pokémon got caught off guard, getting knocked to the floor. The fiend prepared to stomp on them to settle their opposition.

"Scrag!" Scraggy worried for its teammates.

Before Golurk could lay another blow on them, a ball of fire charged at it. The attack made Golurk flinch. "Victini!" a flame-enveloped Victini challenged the Ghost-type Pokémon.

"Victini!" Ash and May called for it.

Golurk shook off the blow to retaliate with a Shadow Ball. To its dismay, it stood no match against Victini's Fire Blast. Victini was sure it landed a hit until Golurk reappeared in front of it and smacked it down. Victini shot down, "Viiiiiii!" it cried out. May gasped, and Ash ran toward Victini.

Golurk prepared to kick Victini until Ash got in the way, "Enough!" The boy took the kick for Victini, getting struck against the wall. Everything felt like a blur to Ash in that moment. His vision was hazy. His body went numb. He could hear nothing other than the sounds of ringing. He wondered if he'd even survive.

May clenched her fists. The sight of a hurt Ash and Victini made her blood boil. She wasn't ready to lose them. She wouldn't allow Golurk's actions to go unpunished. She would make it pay. Her body trembled when a fiery red aura encircled her. The other Pokémon noticed the same aura around Blaziken, but the flames around the Fire-type seemed different than on other occasions. The sound of Ash's body hitting the wall still rang through May's head. She saw him struggle to even get on his knees. May gritted her teeth, "You'll regret that!" The aura around her intensified to resemble a flame.

"Blaz!" Blaziken's eyes glowed red and fired an Overheat. May's rage turned into an earsplitting scream as the aura around her channeled more energy into Blaziken's Overheat. The other Pokémon, including Victini, watched in shock at the power. Golurk braced itself with a Focus Punch. The fiend's fist clashed with the Overheat, but its power paled in comparison. Overheat's flames swallowed Golurk. When it was over, a scorched Golurk moaned and fell over. Pikachu and its friends were in disbelief. When they turned to May and Blaziken, they saw their glow fade. The sudden power left May and Blaziken unable to recall what occurred. Ash's dulled senses failed to realize what May and Blaziken did, but once he regained composure, he saw a defeated Golurk on the floor.
