Chapter 18: One Way or Another

"Scraggy, use Headbutt on Axew!" Ash's Scraggy dashed at Axew with its head tilted forward.

"Petilil, use Magical Leaf on Scraggy!" May's Petilil was also in the fray.

"Axew, dodge Headbutt, and use Scratch on Petilil!" Iris's Axew avoided Scraggy's attack and rushed at Petilil.

Petilil released Magical Leaf on Scraggy, but Ash and Scraggy countered by using its molted skin as protection, causing the Magical Leaf to weaken on impact. Axew popped out of nowhere to scratch Petilil. "Give it another Scratch!" Iris ordered.

"Scraggy, give Headbutt another shot on Axew!" Ash didn't let Scraggy get discouraged. Before Axew could bash Petilil again, Scraggy came from nowhere and sent Axew flying with Headbutt. The Dragon-type groaned in response. During their feud, May took advantage by having Petilil use Synthesis. They were ready to win.

"Ash, May, and Iris may be using the most inexperienced members of their teams, but each trainer battles with a special spice for a unique taste," Cilan stirred the stew as he watched the battle.

"Pi pika," Pikachu was helping Cilan. He watched the novices battle as well.

"You're next, May," Ash smirked when Scraggy switched his gaze from Axew to Petilil.

"That's what you think," May had a sly smile.

"Axew, let's show them who the real winners are," Iris interfered between her opponents.

"Petilil, let's use Magical Leaf on Scraggy!" May punched her fist upward.

Petilil released a barrage of colorful leaves at Scraggy. "Axew, take down Petilil with Scratch!" Iris saw their opportunity.

As the colorful leaves aimed at Scraggy, the baby Pokémon lifted its molten skin for protection again, but the barrage didn't completely go for Scraggy. It split into two different blitzes. The split attack passed by Scraggy, leaving Ash and Iris confused, but May smirked. Ash and Iris realized what May was up to when one of the blitzes aimed at Axew, "Axew, watch out, use Scratch to fight against the Magical Leaf!" Iris countered, but it was futile. Axew was unprepared and took damage. The other half of the attack hit Scraggy from behind. Scraggy and Axew winced as they tried to stand up.

"Got you right where I want you," May muttered when she saw the pair of Pokémon in front of Petilil.

"Axew, use Scratch on Scraggy and fire Dragon Rage at Petilil!" Iris clenched her fists.

"Scraggy, stop Axew with Leer. Then take both of them down with Headbutt!" Ash's Scraggy nodded.

Before Axew could hit Scraggy, the lizard-like Pokémon stopped it with an intimidating glare. It followed with a Headbutt, bashing the Dragon-type against the ground. Meanwhile, May closed in, "Stop them with Stun Spore, then wrap this up with Magical Leaf!"

Ash and Iris's Pokémon failed to move away in time. Petilil released an orange gas that paralyzed the pair. "Darn," Ash wondered what he could do now.

"Axew!" Iris shouted as soon as her Dragon-type became immobilized.

May's Petilil unleashed Magical Leaf on the duo, but Iris had another plan for the sapphire-eyed girl and her Grass-type. "Axew, use Dragon Rage!" Iris commanded.

Axew was unsure if it could muster the strength while paralyzed but looked into Iris's eyes. The dragon nodded, "Aaaaaaaaaaaaxeeeeew!" Axew countered Magical Leaf.
