The car parked at the foot of Arianna's apartment and she wondered why the journey was so short, probably because the seats were soft unlike those on the train. Then she remembered she had used roughly ten minutes to arrive this morning.
"Aren't you getting out" for someone who hadn't said a word since this journey started, that wasn't very friendly. She dragged herself out of the car shutting the door gently behind her
"Wait I never told you where I lived" the driver didn't even spare a glance at her accusation and simply drove off. Arianna scoffed and concluded that he was either really good at his job or just a freak. As she trod up the stairs her stomach rumbled reminding her she hadn't eaten since noon yesterday. She was walking purely on adrenaline.
The scent of tacos drifted into the air, she trailed it to her grandmother's door.
"Abuela guess who? your favorite granddaughter!" Arianna announced as she barged into her grandmother's room. Unlike Arianna's it was neatly kept and in the corner was a comfortable looking bed and an arm chair beside. In the middle of the room was a center table with two chairs and a plate of freshly made tacos sitting on it. Her grandmother was a plump woman with grey hair like most grandmothers and was in the kitchen preparing more tacos.
"You know better than to come in here "her grandmother warned but Arianna was already seated at the table napkin on.
"Thank you for the meal" Arianna said about to shove one of the tacos into her mouth. A flying sandal missed her head by a pinch.
"Those aren't for you!" he grandmother barked taking the plate from the table and not forgiving the one in Arianna's hand "only those who work should eat when you said we were moving to the city you failed to mention the part where I will be feeding and whipping your bottom.
Arianna's grandmother had been the sweetest and always showered her with love and kindness but as she turned into an adult she realized she had outgrown them.
"Come on Abuela I'm starving! and guess what? I went for an interview today for a legit job this time" her grandmother didn't look convinced but still placed two tacos on a plate in front of Arianna and a mug of coffee.
"So what is this job? babysitting, trash gathering, dog walking?" Arianna felt insulted but was happy to rub her new fancy job in the face of her grandmother. With a huge smirk she announced
"I'm going to work for the heir of BM motors" Arianna bragged eating her tacos with nobility like been offered the job promoted her to the upper class. Her grandmother started wide eyed clearly not buying it but amazed at how creative her granddaughter had gotten at lying.
"You? BM motors? Don't make me laugh but sure, they can employ you as a maid" Arianna wanted to furiously slam the table, throw the card Mrs. Juliana had given her at her grandmother and walk out but she wasn't done eating. She took the card from her pocket and placed it on the table with her proudest smirk.
"it's true!" Her grandmother screamed scanning the card and proceeding to sniff it "BM motors the multinational company that stands at the face of revolutionary cars the heir Mrs. Julianna is known to be the brain behind the success of the company after her divorce" . Arianna was amazed that her grandmother knew so much despite been like seventy years old.
"But how did you land this job Niño did you blackmail someone? and what exactly are working as?" Arianna couldn't believe her grandmother.
"What I always do of course and as for the rest, It's classified"
"Oh come on Niño I haven't had anything to brag about with the girls in forever" by girls she meant a group of her fellow grand mothers who met up to mock and brag about their children and grandchildren. Arianna had been the subject of mockery a lot lately.
"Sorry Abuela I took an oath of secrecy" Arianna was enjoying this but the idea of her grandmother bragging to people about her was tempting.
"You know I'm thinking of cooking pasta this evening and I know how you so love pasta" her grandmother meant business and was pricking Arianna where it hurts must: her vulnerability to pasta.
Her grandmother was old and aside from her neighborhood gang she had no influence whatsoever they would talk about it for a week and then find something else to discuss later on. A little gossip wouldn't hurt and the pasta, oh the pasta.
"Come on Niño tell your grandmother everything maybe I can even help you work better after all. I know everything about BM motors" Arianna was at the peak of giving in but then thought about what exactly she was going to tell her grandmother that the son of the heir was disturbed? That they needed someone who was unknown? That there were and are still many more choices? No matter how she phased it there was basically nothing to brag about or make her the main character.
"I'm not falling for your tricks grandma I'm a honest worker who keeps her word" she felt good saying that even though it wasn't at all true, she was just saving her dishonesty till she had done something meaningful.
"You are right you shouldn't talk about your boss behind her back" her grandmother looked repentant which made her look older. Arianna felt bad for her she wasn't a bad person or gossip she just wanted to brag about how great her granddaughter was in front of her friends there was no crime in that.
"But don't worry I'm going to work super hard that you won't even have to tell your friends anything it will be all over the news" when she gets the job that is. Her grandmother gave her a small smile.
"I'm sure you will do great you are a good child after all. Congrats on getting your first job" the way her grandmother said that and looked so proud made Arianna want to come clean about her test tomorrow.
"Yh about that you se.." she was interrupted but the sound of slow clapping at the door stood Mrs. Julianna and the same guy who offered her the job and from his cloths, she recognized that he was the one that had driven her home. "What is going on? Mrs. Julianna why are you here?"
"So? How did she do?" her grandmother asked as she rushed to the door to meet Mrs. Julian. What the heck was going on Arianna knew her grandmother had been creepily informed about BM motors but this was new
"I think she did excellently well. What do you think jasper ?" she gestured to the man who as Arianna now knew was Jasper. He gave a firm nod. Arianna felt like she was invincible.
"Um hello? Does anyone care to explain?" Mrs. Julianna gave her a warm smile
"You passed the test dear" Arianna felt a wash of relief, excitement but confusion still lingered
"This was the test?"
"Let's sit while I explain" her grandmother said ushering Mrs. Julian to a sit and Arianna to the other while she sat of her arm chair. Jasper remained at the door unmoving." This morning, when you rushed out I had a strange visitor Mr. Jasper over there. He introduced himself and told me about your interview. At first I didn't believe him until she showed me a picture of you sitting and talking with Mrs. Julianna" Arianna knew the picture must have been taken by Matilda. She immediately tagged her sneaky.
"And although I didn't tell your grandmother the details I just told her we needed to test you to ensure confidentiality. So we had her probe you to tell her about today. I'm aware how difficult it is to keep secrets from your family but if you can, keeping it from a stranger would be child's play" Mrs. Julianna said taking over from her grandmother.
Arianna was at a loss of words the test wasn't hard but was very easy to fail. Arianna thought back on today Mrs. Julianna asking about her family, her cancelling the test because her son was simply asleep, the Driver already knowing where she lived because he had already been there, it all made sense now there were so many signs but she hadn't seen them. Her mind drifted to her grandmother saying she was the brains behind the company and Arianna understood now and realized she was going to keep her secret because no matter how she phased it, Mrs. Julian still turned out the main character.
