From Marlon's family found out about his relationship with Bolanle they gave him a hard time. They pressured him daily into leaving her and told him, they wouldn't accept a black poverty-stricken in law in their family. Also they wouldn't accept their ugly ducklings if they were to have children. They claim she was a servant and a golddigger. She only wanted him because he had money. They wanted him to marry Alicia to have beautiful children to inherit his inheritance. If he refused to obey they'll ostracized him from the family.
When they just started to pressure him he fought back claiming Bolanle was whom he loved and he wouldn't leave her for them. The more they pressured him though, he started to waver. He loves his family and didn't want to be ostracized by them. He knows that feeling of rejection not from them only but his friends will eat him alive.
His family hasn't burst the news to their friends as yet claiming they're giving him time to redeem himself. But if he refused to they'll burst the news. Also they didn't want the Begums to find out and call off the arrange marriage between Marlon and Alicia. This will hurt their ties and increase of wealth.
Marlon battled internally with himself. He didn't know which to choose. Of course, he loves Lanle but his family was there before her. The harder the battle was to fight, he drowned himself in work, hardly spending time with Lanle. It became so bad that she started to complain.
