As lunchtime approached, the familiar aroma of food trucks wafted through the air, signalling a brief respite from the morning's patrol. Tim led the way to their usual spot, where the training officers congregated.

Lucy's gaze drifted towards John and Jackson, the other rookies who shared her rank.

She knew they'd be sitting together at the rookie table, swapping stories and laughing at their shared experiences.

She longed to join them, to feel like a part of something normal and free of Chris's oppressive shadow. But she knew better than to defy his rules. Tim joined Angela and Nyla, leaving Lucy standing awkwardly.

Lucy sank into a chair at an empty table, her heart heavy with a mixture of shame and frustration. Just as she was about to stand up to get some food, her phone buzzed with an incoming message from Chris.

She glanced down, her stomach twisting as she read his words: "no eating baby, you know this is for your own good xx."

His controlling behaviour knew no bounds, even reaching into her work hours.

Lucy sighed deeply. She couldn't risk upsetting him further, not when he had already shown how stressed he was. She knew she needed the energy to get through her shift especially considering she hadn't taken her insulin, but disobeying Chris always came with dire consequences.

*How did I become so weak?* she thought, her fingers tracing the outline of her cell phone.

Lunch ended all too soon, and Lucy followed Tim back to their patrol car, her mind still reeling from Chris's message. The remainder of their shift passed by in a blur, with Lucy struggling to focus on her duties as her blood sugar continued to drop.

Finally, they returned to the station as the last vestiges of daylight faded from the sky, leaving behind a canvas of dark blue and twinkling stars. As soon as they parked, Lucy practically bolted from the car, eager to escape the suffocating confines.

She made her way to the changing room, her legs feeling like jelly beneath her. Once there, she quickly shed her uniform, grateful to be free of its constricting embrace. Slipping into her comfortable sweats, Lucy took a deep breath and closed her eyes, allowing herself a brief moment of respite.

She knew she wouldn't have much time before Chris expected her home, but she couldn't resist savoring the feeling of freedom, however fleeting it might be.

Lucy's steps grew heavier as she approached her apartment complex, the weight of her situation pressing down on her like a leaden blanket.

She knew she had to tell someone, had to find a way out. But as she stumbled through the door, her vision blurring from her unstable blood sugar levels, she was greeted by the person she feared most - Chris.

His smile sent a chill down her spine, and she could barely muster the energy to return it as he pulled her close, his hands gripping her waist possessively. His warm breath tickled her neck as he whispered, "I thought maybe tonight is the night we try for a baby."

Lucy's heart sank. Not only was she not ready for such a monumental step, but her health was in no condition to support a pregnancy.
