Chapter Five

~~

Nathan looked at Aivy as she stood over the stove "Cobbler is done!" she announced. He sat at the small table in her Aunt and Uncle's kitchen above the mercantile.

"What does Lindy hate?" He asked.

"Lindy hates it when people act like she is a child, and she hates to be corrected so be sure to do that." She said as she handed him a plate. The dessert smelt amazing; she had even put ice cream on it. He took a bite, the apples were soft and delicious and the oats were crunchy and sweet blending well with the vanilla ice cream. It was one of the best things he had ever tasted.

"You made this?" he asked shocked. Aivy blushed instantly she nodded taking a seat across from him she self-consciously played with a stray piece of her blonde hair.

"It's delicious Miss Lawrence." He said sincerely.

"Thank you; it has always been a dream of mine to open a café." She said

"You should do it then" Nathan said taking another bite of cobbler "This is better than a lot of the 'fine dining' restaurants I ate at whilst growing up in Boston."

"You mean it?"

"Yes, you Miss Lawrence are a very good cook."

"Just call me Aivy, and I'll call you Nathan." Aivy said. Her green eyes warm.

"Deal" He said smiling "So I hear you like a certain school teacher... Mr. MacCailein"

Aivy blushed bright red "How did you know I liked Ervin?"

"Levi is terrible at keeping secrets. So why aren't you two courting?"

"He doesn't even know I exist!" Aivy said motioning to herself with her hands "I never thought I'd say this but I am Levi!"

Nathan laughed heartily at that confession, he loved his best friend but he never wanted to be in such a situation. Lindy seemed completely oblivious to the world around her.

Lindy found herself sitting on the swing again; she looked towards the road that led to town. She had been looking for Levi even waiting for him. She even caught herself looking out the windows when she was indoors. She wanted to see him, and it disappointed her that he hadn't come back since the kiss.

That kiss her stomach did flip-flops just thinking about it. She never really thought about it but she had always felt drawn to him, he always made her laugh no matter how bad she was feeling, he seemed to know the right things to say to make her feel better. He had always been there for her, something she had often taken for granted.

Her date with Nathan would be tonight and in all honesty she wasn't sure she wanted to go. Nathan was dark and mysterious, he was like a puzzle but she couldn't stop thinking about Levi. That wasn't very fair to Nathan was it?

She sighed perhaps she had scared off her best friend by stupidly suggesting that they practice kissing. Of all the things she had said before that had to be the most embarrassing.

She wanted to talk to someone about it but who? Mahailey would just tell her to tell Levi, Aivy would give her that look, the one her mother gave her. Julie and Ginny would see everything as terribly romantic, as they always did. Neither of them could wait to be married. And the very last people on earth she would tell were any of her male family members.

She walked into the pink barn; she smiled at the memory of her parents deciding on a color. Her mother had insisted they paint it pink as it would be different than others; her father wanted it to be white. But in the end he painted it pink to please her mother, he had told her "Love means that we'll put their needs or wants over our own, if only to see a smile on their face."
