Chapter Six

Lindy lay down in the tall grass as she had when she was a child. Spring was in the air, no longer did you have to wear a cloak when leaving the house. It was Lindy's favorite time of the year; it was when everything was new again, everything was coming back to life. She smiled the brilliant colors of spring were on their way, and the promise of new life.
She wondered if she would ever be a mother. She was twenty-three a spinster by all means. But then again her mother older then her when she birthed all of her younger siblings. So she still had time. She wondered if Levi wanted children.
She had let herself daydream for a long while by the time two of their ranch hands walked past her.
"There you are Miss Lindy." Fergus said worriedly.
"Where else would I be Gus?" She asked happily, still enjoying her own thoughts more than reality.
"Miss Lindy you're wanted at the house... urgently." Ernest said the other ranch hand quietly. The way they looked she knew it wasn't good news.
"Thank you both." She said getting up and gathering her skirts as she took off in a dead run towards the house something was wrong. Her mind raced with the possibilities. She was happy when she finally got to the door. She didn't even stop to catch her breath before running through the door.
"Lindy... Mama and Papa and Mr. Adams are waiting for you in the study." Ginny said from the last step of the stairs. She held Maggie on her hip, something wasn't right- she could feel it- everyone seemed to know something she didn't as always.
She thanked her sister and walked briskly to the study. She wondered why Nathan was here and why he was talking to her parents.
She knew right then something was terribly wrong. They all had saddened expressions like someone had died.
"Darling" Scarlett said coming to her side at once "Come sit down."
"What's wrong?" Lindy asked looking from her Mother to her Father to Nathan.
George cleared his throat and looked to Nathan who nodded as if they had a conversation she hadn't heard.
"Belinda" George said. She knew it wasn't good when he used her full name "Levi was in an accident and he's in rough shape-"
"Is he going to live?"
"We don't know Darling." George said walking over to her.
"How did this happen?" Lindy asked this time looking at Nathan. His dark gaze held hers.
"He was in Casper and he won the case... one of the men on the losing side shot him and beat him up a bit..."
"Where is he now?" Lindy asked not waiting for an answer she turned to her father "Please Papa take me to him, I need to be there."
"Now Lindy I'm not sure that's safe-"
"Mama?" she turned pleading eyes to her mother "Please...talk him into this, I have to be there. He's my best friend."
"Mahailey and Marty are going too Mr. Wade so it won't be just us alone."
"Alright, Lindy go get ready... but Mr. Adam's I'm trusting you too look after her."
"Yes sir."
"I'll help you get ready." Her mother said following her out of the room.
"What if he doesn't make it?" Lindy asked quietly "What if he dies before I get to tell him how I feel?"
