Chapter Thirteen

~~

Lindy smiled when she saw Ariel's moccasins peeking from underneath her long skirts, it had to be one of the first times she saw her cousin wear anything on her feet unless it was snowing she would opt to go barefoot. But the night was colder so her father had probably made her wear something to keep her feet warm.

"Would you girls prefer to sit up in the seat with me or in the back in the wagon?" Daniel asked receiving a large sigh from twelve-year-old Silas.

"Why do they get to choose?" Silas asked crossing his arms.

"Because Si girls are to be treated with respect, they're to be treated as if each one of them is a princess... You know that."

"But Ariel always gets to sit in the seat I always have to sit in the back of the wagon like I'm supplies."

"Well I'm their favorite." Ariel said with a laugh

"Pa!" Silas whined

"Silas we love you all the same, we don't have favorites... now since you two insist on arguing I think you can work your problems out in the back... Lindy you and Isaac can sit in the front with me. Honestly if the two-seated buckboard didn't need a wheel fixed we wouldn't have this problem."

Lindy held back a laugh; Silas reminded her of her own brothers whom she missed much to her surprise.

She accepted help from Isaac as Ariel mumbled under her breath as she climbed into the back.

Daniel just chuckled slightly as he climbed into the seat and took the reins. Lindy guessed after having so many children he was used to easily handling arguing siblings.

The wagon ride to Laura's passed by quickly; she only lived a few miles away from December and Daniel.  Once there they discovered that Laura had been feeling poorly so they decided to stay home.  Much to Lindy's surprise Ariel had begged for both of them to stay the night so they could help Laura, and Daniel had agreed.

"Everyone will be going home by now anyway." He had said, reassuring Lindy that December wouldn't be mad about her missing the rest of the welcome party.

Lindy was happy to see Laura even though she was feeling poorly she still look amazing, she had always been jealous on Laura's hair, it barely curled in a very becoming way. While Lindy's hair barely remained controlled curling out of anything she tried to confide it too, including the long braid she had started to wear it in.

Laura looked up at Lindy with her light blue-green eyes "Lindy, how are you?" she asked with the same kind smile Lindy remembered from when she had first met her.

"I'm... horrible actually." Lindy answered honestly thankful it was just her and Laura in Laura's bedroom.

"Why what's wrong?"

Lindy told Laura the whole story ending with "And I still love him." she hated being away from Levi but she knew it would be even worse to be there while he had another girl in his arms.

"Oh Lindy I'm sorry!" Laura said sitting up in her bed "Are you sure he was with this woman though? A hug could mean many things... Maybe she's just a friend from college or a relative of some sort?"

"She was devastatingly beautiful Laura! And she had on such beautiful clothes it was the latest fashion and her hair! It was straight!"

Laura giggled slightly only to put her hand over her mouth to try and hide it, but Lindy had already seen it.

"Lindy I'm sorry!" Laura apologized "But fancy clothes and straight hair isn't everything! A lot of people wished they had your beautiful curls."

"My curls are not beautiful! They're a complete mess!"
