Before I got electrocuted, I was having a pretty great day.
It was the field trip to the Grand Canyon, where the extraction team would take Piper, Leo, and I to Camp Half-Blood, and I could finally tell them everything. I hated keeping secrets.
Leo's arm was around me as I laid on him, my back to his chest. He had the window seat, like always. I gave him my other headphone as we listened to music on the trip over. Coach Hedge, the protector I was assigned to, had narrowed down that the monster was in this exact class, and I knew he was going to act that trip.

Blood runs thicker than water
I had a pounding headache as I sat there, and not to mention the fact Hedge made sure I took my drugs—sorry, medications—ever since that incident on Halloween. Chiron was very upset at my action, and planned to call the satyr every once in a while, just to make sure I was taking my meds. They made me worse if anything, but if I acted out I'd get in trouble.
Leo shifted underneath me, readjusting his arm around me. I looked up at him to see he was mostly zoned out again. I told him back on the first day that this was the planned extraction date. His hair was cleaned up well—because Piper forced us to do a self-care night the night before—and his face was smooth. His eyebags were the only bad thing, but then again I guess I couldn't be talking. Every few nights he'd sneak into my dorm and would sleep in my bed with me, getting rid of both our nightmares.
But both feel the same when your eyes are closed
I am the rivers daughter
He seemed to notice me staring because he looked down at me and grinned. "You're awake."
"No shit?" I yawned.
Everyone else on the bus was listening to music, talking, or sleeping. Isabel and her group were doing make up on some poor asleep kid.
The bus rumbled along a bumpy road. Out the windows, desert rolled by under a bright blue sky. The desert I've always hated.
Leo fiddled with some pipe cleaners and screws we snagged from the auto-mechanics classroom. Leo wore a white T-shirt and his Mom's old army jacket, some beige cargos matched with it. Even though he had plenty of pockets, he insisted I keep track of his stuff.
And you'll be her son when we're both reposed!
Blood runs thicker than water.
Piper wore faded jeans, her pink converse, and a Hello Kitty zip-up. She taught me something called 'The Sandwich Method' where you match your shirt to your shoes, and I will admit, it worked amazingly. Her brown hair was braided into a crown with a few strands sticking out. She barely wore any makeup—just concealer, blush, and mascara—like she was trying not to draw attention to herself, but it didn't work. She was gorgeous anyways. Her eyes changed like a kaleidoscope—brown, blue and green. If I wasn't so into Leo—whaaaa? who said that??—I'd one hundred percent try for Piper. Sadly, she seemed far away from dating.
She helped me pick a cute outfit out. I had some dark jean shorts, my lucky blue converse, and my Montauk hoodie. Under I had a white tank-top. She insisted on cutting my hair a while ago, and she did great (please don't hurt me). Just a few strands—curtain bangs she cut for me—were sticking out to my face. I think anything to do with beauty, Aphrodite kids are naturally good at. Other than her trying to cut her hair choppy on purpose.
And you'll be her son when we're both reposed,
Come in, the water is fine.
I looked at her over the seat and my heart stopped.
