Was I nervous a monster was going to smell me or Jason and find my Mom's apartment?
Abso-fucking-loutely.
I nervously drummed my fingers on the steering wheel of the blue Acura I drove. It was a car I purchased with money I earned from working in New York, figure skating competitions, and with bet money from Camp—thanks to Travis placing stupid bets almost every day.
Leo fiddled with something silver in his lap, absently looking out of the side mirror.
Piper, Jason, and Annabeth were all chatting behind me.
Chromakopia.
Chromakopia.
Chromakopia.
I instantly noticed this song was from Tyler the Creators new album. I slightly turned up the volume
"Okay, but since when did you know how to play chess?" Piper scowled at Jason.
He shrugged. "I dunno. Just kind of found out a few days ago."
Annabeth snickered. "Maybe he's secretly dating one of my siblings."
Jason's eyes widened, and he furiously said something, but I looked back at the road and focused on a lane change.
I'm gon' make it out, promise I'm gon' make it out
Mama, I gon' make it out, pussy, I'm gon' make it out
I glanced at my review mirror and noticed a white truck tailgating me. I frowned and looked in his front windshield, but it was so tinted I wasn't sure if it was legal.
I switched to the middle lane of the highway. I'd have to turn off and exit soon, anyways.
Leo closed his eyes and threw his head back, but his hands still twisted around small silver and gold bands.
"Kie?" Annabeth asked, hesitant.
I hummed in acknowledgement.
I ain't never had a doubt inside me
And if I ever told you that I did,
I'm fuckin' lying, can you feel the light?
"Do you see that white truck?" Annie looked in the mirror inside, squinting.
I looked again, but couldn't see anything. I sighed, "They're just being assholes. Don't worry about them."
"They've been following us for a few miles. . ." Annabeth trailed off, turning around in her seat fully. "Kiera, go to the slow lane."
I put my blinker on and waited for a gap, slipping into the next lane.
The truck put their blinker on and followed behind me closely.
I narrowed my eyes and the drumming of my fingers got quicker.
Can you feel the light inside?
Can you feel that fire? (Can you feel it? Can you feel it? Oh)
Oh, fire (Can you feel it? Can you feel it? Ooh, oh,) fire.
Can you feel the light (inside) inside?
Annabeth looked deep in thought, looking at the closest exit sign speed past us. The truck started tailgating closer, and if I slowed down any bit, I'd hit them.
I flicked my left blinker on, and switched from the far right lane, to the far left—the fast lane. I sped up.
The truck followed my movements. That's how I knew it was off, and it wasn't by coincidence. Why would someone go from the slow lane, to the fast lane, staying close to me?
