032. lessons learned

Jessica is peacefully sleeping in her bed, buried under her covers. Inches away from her, Spencer is lying on top of the covers, holding a book to his stomach, also fast asleep.

The two are woken up by a ringing phone, Jessica whining at the noise so early in the morning.

"Sorry." Spencer mumbles, digging his phone out of his pocket. he flips it open, putting it to his ear. "Hello?" He groggily asks. "Mm-hmm. Okay. Yeah." He hangs up. "We have a case. Terrorism."

"But my bed." Jessica pouts, digging her face into her pillow.

"I know." Spencer mumbles, rubbing his eyes.

Jessica sighs as her phone starts to ring and she answers it.

"Yes, JJ?" She answers. "A case?"

"Yeah. You gotta get in immediately. It's a terrorist threat." JJ states.

"Be there in a bit." Jessica hangs up. She huffs, running her hands over her face.

"I'm gonna go start the coffee." Spencer says, getting up and going out to the kitchen.

Jessica lets out an incoherent response despite him already being gone.

Jessica and Spencer get to the BAU and Jessica notices the new woman at Elle's old desk.

"He really hired her?" Jessica mumbles.

"He was gonna hire someone eventually." Spencer points out.

"But Elle." Jessica frowns.

"Yeah, I know, I miss her, too, but..." Spencer shrugs.

Jessica sighs.

"I need more sugar." Spencer goes over to the kitchenette.

"Of course you do." Jessica rolls her eyes. She takes a deep breath, walking over to the desk that now belongs to the new woman. "Hi." She greets making the older woman turn to her. Jessica offers a polite smile.

"Hi." She returns the polite smile.

"I, uh, I'm Jessica Taylor. I suppose we're new teammates." Jessica says, holding her hand out.

"Hi. Emily Prentiss." Emily smiles at the somewhat warm welcome. She's able to notice the hesitance in the brunette's eyes that she fails at hiding, but at least she's being nice. "And I-I guess so."

"Well, welcome." Jessica says. "Have you met anyone beside Hotch yet?"

"Uh, yeah, now everybody but Derek Morgan and Spencer Reid, I believe." Emily says.

"Oh, well, he's--" Jessica turns just as Spencer is walking over. "Here." She grabs Spencer's arm, pulling him over. Spencer lets out a small noise of protest, almost spilling his coffee. "This is Dr. Spencer Reid."

"Hi. Emily Prentiss." She introduces, holding her hand out.

"Hi." Spencer waves, giving her his usual smile.

"He doesn't shake hands. Germs." Jessica informs.

"Oh. Sorry." Emily lowers her hand. "Nice to meet you two."

"You, too." Spencer gives her a small smile.

"And that would be our cue." Jessica mutters, watching JJ head to the round table room.

"Everybody, meet Agent Prentiss." Hotch says, walking in with Gideon following him.

"The other day." Penelope says.
