Different though
One day, after a particularly rough mission, Jay found himself in Kai’s clinic, cradling his right arm with a pained expression on his face. His elbow had been wrenched in an awkward position during the battle, and he was convinced something much worse had happened.
Kai knelt beside him, gloves on, examining the injury with a calm, reassuring demeanor. "Okay, Jay, I need you to take a deep breath," Kai said, his voice soft and steady, trying to keep Jay from panicking.
Jay’s face twisted in confusion and pain. His eyes were wide as he stammered, "Wh...wha...t?!" His voice was shaky, clearly on the edge of freaking out. His hand hovered over his elbow, as if touching it would make things worse. "Kai, my arm! My elbow... It’s... it’s broken, right?!"
Kai raised an eyebrow and gently placed a hand on Jay’s shoulder. "Jay, relax. You’ve just dislocated your elbow."
But Jay wasn’t hearing it. His eyes darted to Kai, panic setting in even deeper. "No! No, Kai, this is my best arm! My right arm!" He swallowed, his breath hitching as his voice climbed a few octaves. "What if it’s... gone? I’ll have to—oh no, you’re gonna have to remove the whole thing, aren’t you?!"
Kai blinked, trying to suppress a laugh but staying professional. "Jay," he said firmly, giving him a small shake. "Your arm isn’t broken, and I’m not going to remove it."
But Jay wasn’t convinced. His mind raced with possibilities. "But... how will I be able to eat? How will I write, Kai?! And draw! And put clothes on! And..." He gasped dramatically. "Oh no, I won’t be able to be a ninja anymore! This is it! My career’s over!"
Kai pinched the bridge of his nose, stifling the urge to laugh at Jay’s overreaction. "Jay, buddy, would you please trust me?" Kai’s tone was calm but slightly exasperated. He knew Jay could be a little dramatic sometimes, but this was a whole new level.
Jay blinked, taking a deep breath like Kai had asked, but his anxiety hadn’t lessened. "Are you sure you won’t have to amputate? Like, one hundred percent sure?"
Kai rolled his eyes, his patience holding strong. "Yes, Jay. I’m sure. Now, sit still, and let me pop your elbow back into place."
Jay winced at the thought but nodded, his face still scrunched in worry. "Okay... But if this goes wrong, I'm holding you accountable!"
Kai just shook his head, muttering under his breath, "It’s a dislocation, not a life-threatening injury." He moved quickly and expertly, gripping Jay’s arm just so and, with a swift but gentle motion, popped the elbow back into place.
Jay yelped in surprise but then blinked, staring at his arm in disbelief. "Wait... that’s it?!" He flexed his fingers, moving his arm cautiously. "It’s... it’s okay?"
Kai nodded, a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "Told you. You’re fine. You just need to take it easy for a while."
Jay blinked, looking almost sheepish now. "Oh... um... thanks." He scratched the back of his head with his other hand, his face flushed with embarrassment.
Kai patted him on the back. "No problem. But next time, maybe don’t jump to the conclusion that you’ll need a full amputation, okay?"
Jay chuckled awkwardly, finally letting go of his fear. "Yeah, I guess I overreacted a little."
"A little?" Kai raised an eyebrow. "Jay, you were ready to give up your entire career over a dislocated elbow."
Jay sighed dramatically, leaning back. "Well, it is my best arm, after all."
