After catching the vile scent nearby, Zeus and I could no longer follow our mate from a distance. Within seconds, we were right behind her.

"Was it so unbearable to sit inside a car with me that you'd rather walk through a dodgy park than let me take you home?"

She flinched at the sound of my voice but did not turn around. "When will you get it through your thick skull that I'm not some prize to be won, Alex?"

Zeus snorted in the back of my mind. "By the Goddess, she doesn't give up, does she?"

I rolled my eyes, though Zeus had a point.

"This isn't about winning, Mia. This is about us—you and me. The bond between us is real, and you know it. Stop being silly, and let's talk like adults."

Mia stopped in the middle of that goddamn park and turned around. "Why? Am I giving you too much grief, and you thought bringing me to your bed tonight would be easier?"

She was trying to pick a fight, playing defence to escape it. Well, not this time, honey.

"You're scared," I said softly, stepping closer. Mia's body tensed, her shoulders stiffening as though she might run. "But there's nothing to be afraid of. I would never hurt you, Mia. Not in the way you think."

My voice dropped low. The reassurance was as much for her as for Zeus, who was growling at the back of my mind, urging me to push harder.

Her expression flickered with something—uncertainty, doubt—but she raised her chin, defiant as ever. "I'm not scared of you, Alex. I just don't trust you."

Her words stung more than silver. But I swallowed down the frustration and leaned in, my voice barely above a whisper. "You will."

Before she could argue, I gently took her wrist and pulled her towards the car. She resisted, but the fire in her eyes was beginning to flicker. Eventually, she let me lead her back.

Zeus and I made the mistake of focusing only on Mia's childlike banter. Our Alpha instincts slipped, and the low-life stench caught up with us before we knew it.

When the scumbag pointed the gun at her, my body moved, ready to shield her heart before my mind could catch up. I positioned myself between the barrel and Mia. "Man, that's not a toy," I said, my voice steady and calm despite Zeus' anger pushing to the surface.

Every fibre in my body screamed to act, but I had to keep it together for her.

The man's grip tightened on the gun. I inched forward, eyes locking onto his. "If it's money you want, fine. Just put the gun down, and I'll give it to you."

But I knew what a low-life like him was after. It was not money. He was ready to hurt Mia before I stepped closer.

"Don't you dare move, Zeus."
