It was 1 a.m., and everybody was far too drunk and loud. I had had enough of that party. Zeus was agitated in my mind like I had never seen before—not even at our first week here; he had been that bad.

"Zeus, what must I do to calm you down? My head is about to explode."

"I want to shift!" He growled, his voice vibrating in my mind.

"Fine! But let's get further into the woods. There might be couples out here seeking privacy."

Unable to bear his agitation any longer, I sprinted into the dark forest, the trees blurring as I pushed myself to go faster. Humans would not venture this deep at this hour. It was our territory now.

"We're far enough, Zeus. No human scent around." Without waiting for permission, Zeus took over, ripping off my clothes. "Really, Zeus? Those were my favourite trousers. Couldn't you wait?"

He did not make a nasty comment, as I had expected. At full speed, Zeus bolted south, his massive paws pounding the earth beneath him.

I did not want to go on a scavenger hunt for whatever he was after. "What can you possibly want at this place at this hour?" I asked, annoyed.

We had never explored this part of town before, and I was exhausted. The bloody school year starts in a few hours, and my bed sounds way nicer now. Last night's nightmare did not let me have a peaceful sleep.

"Have you lost all your senses living in this bloody place for too long? Take a whiff, and you will know why we are here." Zeus released a powerful howl that echoed through the night, a wild smile spreading across his wolfish face. "We found our mate, buddy."

The scent was faint, barely there, but the pull—the undeniable force of the mate bond was strong enough to guide him there. My heart pounded in my chest as realisation hit me.

I smirked, unable to resist. "Well, I thought you said we wouldn't find her hiding in America."

Zeus did not answer; his focus was solely on the building ahead. Disturbed by the howl, a few people peeked out of their windows. We were too close to the apartment block.

Our little mate was the last to roll up her window. Her scent of crushed pine needles and wild berries entered Zeus' nostrils, intensifying with each breath —a blend so intoxicatingly fresh and wild that it made our senses come alive. The primal urge surged through us, the temptation to storm into her room and claim her almost unbearable.

It was a scent that reminded us of the deep forests where we felt most alive. Where we truly belonged. It was the scent of home.

"She smells like home!" Zeus and I murmured together, the words slipping out as if they were the only truth we knew.

Her head turned toward us, and her bouncy brown hair cascaded over her shoulder. She was heaven! Like she had stepped out of a dream.

Zeus took a hesitant step forward, then stopped, confusion clouding his thoughts. "She's human."
