The coach's whistle floated on the air once more, and I tackled Jordan's shoulder hard. "Man, it's only practice. You don't have to send me to the hospital." Jordan complained, rubbing his shoulder. From the sound of his voice, it must have hurt a lot.
I walked away, returning to my position. "Zeus, can you not today, please?"
He rolled his eyes in the annoying way he did. "OK, OK. I'll turn it down."
"I think you should go away and let me fly solo. It's already difficult to control my strength and enjoy myself without you trying to kill anyone that you don't like. Because, boy, you dislike everybody from the team. I mean everybody."
Zeus snorted. "That isn't even true, Alex! I like Simpson."
I had to laugh. He does not know the girl. "Zeus, Coach doesn't even let the girl speak. She's there only to get the drinks."
"That's because your coach is a misogynist who thinks her place is to serve. Besides, I could teach him a thing or two about being a leader."
"Whatever, just go to sleep a little and give me a break."
After Zeus finally stopped bothering me, practice went smoothly, and I scored a few points. I knew it was not entirely fair. My senses were more heightened than theirs, especially during games, but I could do nothing about it. I need to blend in at school and appear normal—otherwise, I would be stuck in America doing nothing.
I could not spend every waking moment thinking about everything I was missing at the Red Moon, so I needed to keep my mind occupied.
"Hi, Alex."
I finished my drink and turned to the chorus of voices. The cheerleading squad dressed in their uniforms, reading to practice. Ash still seemed upset from this morning, but she forced a smile, trying to show her posse that everything was fine between us.
"Will we see you at the welcome party in the woods tonight?" Asked Carly, Ash's best friend, whom I would not call "best friend" because I had also fucked her several times.
I stared at them without saying anything, and Zeus laughed. "Buddy, you've become a walking American movie cliché. You're the captain of the American football team and have bedded the entire cheerleading squad, including the head cheerleader. When I tell you we must leave ASAP, you don't listen to me!!!"
Oh, by the Goddess, Zeus was right. But leaving America is not an option yet. "Yeah, girls, I'll see you tonight."
Ben noticed the girls and came running over, flashing his not-so-bright smile. "Hello, girls. I'll be there tonight, too."
The girls smiled back as they walked away, and he waved at the blonde girl trailing behind them like a lost puppy.
Ben turned to me with a scowl, and I asked. "What?"
"For once, can you leave someone for me first? I'm tired of getting your sloppy seconds."
"You fancy the blonde? She's not on the team."
"Yes, but she's trying hard. She'll make it this year. Once she does, I'll ask her out."
"If you're that taken by her, you should ask her out regardless of whether she makes the team."
"I've high standards, Cromwell. I'm a football player, and she needs to be a cheerleader for me to take her out."
Goddess, Zeus is right. They are too much of a cliché.
Grabbing my bag, I patted his chest. "That's overrated, mate! If you like her, you should reconsider it."
