I beamed when my mate stepped out of her building, looking more beautiful than ever. "Hey, you!" I greeted her with a smile.

"What are you doing here?" Mia exclaimed, clearly taken aback by my unexpected appearance at her door on Sunday morning.

"I thought we could do something nice." Today, I was determined to make sure we had a good time.

She glanced at my car, then back at me. "Have you been drinking?"

"Nope."

"Drugs? Anything in the last twelve hours?"

"Mia," I laughed, "I've never been drunk, and drugs don't affect me."

What was with the sudden interrogation? I was wondering where this was all coming from.

Mia seemed serious, formulating another question, but I cut her off before she could ask more. "What is this, a parents' questionnaire?"

"I'm just making sure," she said, her eyes trailing to my clothes. You're still dressed from last night's clothes. You clearly came from the party."

I was still wearing my blue button-down shirt and chinos. With our busy night, there was no time to stop by the penthouse and change. This was another slip on my part, but it was not like we had broken any sweat last night; quite the contrary.

"I returned to the party after leaving here because I had some unfinished business to take care of. I wasn't partying, Mia." Hoping she would not pry, I casually said, because I could not tell her I had made Jordan and Ashley sob.

Mia nodded once and stepped closer. She looked away and back at me. "If I let you kiss me again. Will that help take me out of your system?"

Leaning in, I whispered, "No. Nothing you can say or do will get you out of my system. In fact, the more time passes, the more you'll be a part of me." I paused. "Now, if you're done playing police and interrogating me, I've got a present for you."

I walked to the car and pulled out a box. She raised a brow. "Hiking boots?"

"Yes, I figured you didn't have a pair. You're going to need them around here."

She glanced at my white sneakers. "Won't you need some, too?"

I shook my head and opened the car door for her. As she slid inside, goosebumps tingled up my arm.

I drove us to the most beautiful hiking spot I knew. When we arrived, I wrapped my big hand around hers as soon as I shut the door. I was so eager to feel her hand in mine, eager to show the world we were together.

We started the hike hand in hand, and I had to release it at some point. Some parts of the hike were a one-person trail.

Mia was quiet, and Zeus and I were getting bored of hearing her thoughts—her doubts about everything. We wanted to listen to her speak.
