Mumbai - Two Weeks Later
RENYA
Two weeks had passed, and while everyone's life seemed to change, mine felt strangely static.
I'm not complaining; becoming someone's wife is no small change, but my husband, Mukul, remained in denial. Everyone advised giving him time, which I did.
We returned to Mumbai the day after the rest of the family visited Mukul's mother in the hospital.
Unlike the rest, who flew back on Devansh's jet, Mukul, his mother, and I traveled on a commercial plane with a medical team in tow.
Admittedly, I was terrified that Mukul might leave me at the airport and sever ties, but he didn't. Instead, he brought me to Nirvana Mansion, a place I hadn't known existed right next to Agnihotri Mansion.
For the past two weeks, I had been living with Mukul and Parinidhi's father at Nirvana Mansion.
Mukul's mother had been transferred to a city hospital, yet there had been no improvement in her condition. We all prayed for her recovery, seeing how deeply Mukul was affected.
He kept his emotions tightly reined in, not speaking much or sharing his burdens, which must have been suffocating.
And although we had been living as a married couple, it was merely a pretense for the benefit of Uncle Vikram.
The last thing Mukul wanted was to add to his uncle's stress, given his father's betrayal and his mother's critical state.
For weeks now, my days had fallen into a heart-wrenching rhythm: I would wake, attempt to speak to Mukul, wait anxiously for his return, try again to break through his silence, and then retire to bed, our words unspoken and the distance between us growing.
But today, I resolved to change that.
I wasn't just going to express my own feelings; I needed to hear his—to let him know that I was truly here for him, standing by his side.
With a newfound determination, I left our room and headed towards his study, where he had been secluded for the past two hours.
It was clear he wasn't planning on leaving that room anytime soon, but tonight, I wouldn't let him shut me out.
Once outside the study, I knocked tentatively, my heart pounding with anticipation.
"Come in," Mukul's voice floated gently from within. I pushed the door open with trembling hands and stepped inside.
His eyes lifted from the documents to meet mine, and I saw his jaw tense, his grip on the pen tighten. His gaze darkened—a clear sign of how much my presence disturbed him.
"Mukul..." My voice wavered as his intense gaze seemed to convey nothing but disdain.
He returned his attention to the documents, ignoring me completely. Despite the sting of his disregard, I composed myself and approached his desk. Tapping lightly on it, I sought to capture his attention again.
He set his pen down and finally looked up, his expression asking silently, "What are you doing here?"
I took in his gaunt appearance—troubled eyes, dark circles, pale skin. It was clear he was carrying the weight of his father's sins, tortured by the thought that his father had ruined the life of the woman he wanted by his side.
