waking up on her sixteenth birthday felt no different from waking up and being fifteen. the only thing that was different was that she didn't have to go to school today and the fact that wes had made her pancakes, they were the best part of her morning.
"make a wish," he had a candle lit as he sat beside her, the warmth shining on her as she rolled her eyes. she leaned over, clossed her eyes and blew out the single candle, "i hope to god you wished for this superman book," wes pulled the book out from under the table, watching as olivia's mouth fell open.
"you got me the thus spoke zarathustra," she reached her hand out to touch it as he nodded, smiling at her. "the superman book," he called it as she laughed, pulling him into a hug. "fuck," she laughed, brushing her curls out of her face. "what next? did you bring bowie back to life?"
wes shook his head sadly, "you just spoiled the gift i was gonna give you on your twenty first," he spoke as she scoffed and shoved him slightly. wes just laughed, the sound soothing her as he pulled one of the rings off his finger, "i also want you to have this, it was meant for you anyway." he stated, the laugh fading from his voice as he placed it on the palm of her open hand.
"i can't take it," she picked it up, ready to give it back to him. she stared at the plain silver band, playing with it in her right hand as she held it back to him. wes didn't take it, his eyes were stuck on it though. "dad wanted me to give it to you," he spoke, his voice soft as he slid it onto her finger, gently tracing the cold silver.
"what?" oliva looked up at him, confusion in her eyes. "i was just keeping it for you, until today." he followed her lead, smiling at the younger girl. olivia opened her mouth but she knew she had nothing to say so she shut it.
"happy birthday, brat." he pulled her into his arms, closing his eyes when she returned the hug. "i can't wait to see you grow up," he whispered, like it wasn't even meant for her but for himself, for a secret third person and she didn't say anything and that was fine.

they hadn't planned to match their outfits, silly on their ends but when olivia sees aria in that bright red dress, it's like it doesn't even matter. somehow they would always match, someone they would always know what the other was going to do.
"there's the birthday girl," olivia barely hide time to come up with a cheeky response when aria's hand rested on the back of her neck, the other on her hip as she pulled the girl in for a kiss. aria's lips were soft, her touch was delicate and when olivia kissed her back, tasting her lipglosss, she couldn't help but smile into the kiss. when aria pulled away, she was dissapointed, she wanted more but when it came to aria, she always craved more. more. more.
"i know you said i didn't need to get you anything," aria started, the night before she had called olivia who told her that just being with aria was enough, "but what kind of girlfriend would i be if i didn't spoil you just a little?" aria scrunched up her nose and olivia was starry eyed when she looked at her.
"i just don't want you to spend money on this," olivia gently placed a hand on her cheek, gently stroking her skin with her thumb. olivia's smile looked like it was pluck straight from a cartoon, goofy and giddy. "i want to spend money on you, olivia marlene." aria pulled out a little box from her bag, handing it to the redhead who thanked her softly.
she slid open the box, getting a look at what laid inside. it was a necklace, a silver chain with a moonstone at the end, olivia could see her reflection in it.
"it's beautiful," her words are soft when she speaks her fingers gently tracing over the necklace, it looked like something she would have liked when she was a little girl, something she still liked. it didn't take a genius to recognize olivia's style but it was the thought that really mattered to her, the fact that aria saw it and thought of her.
"thank you, i love it." olivia watched as aria picked up the chain softly, standing behind her. she brushed the red curls out of the way before putting it around olivia's neck and tying it for her. "it's one of those things that i knew you'd like but wouldn't buy for yourself," aria spoke, now standing in front of olivia again as the redhead smiled down at her.
"i love you, olivia." it was those four words that melted olivia's heart, that made her skin tingle with love. the words that replayed at night as she tried to go to sleep, the feeling that bubbled up in her chest when she woke up the next morning. "i love you, aria maria."

olivia placed her jacket on the cold steps, her and aria sitting side by side. "if someone threw a party for my art, i think i would try to pop by," aria moved closer as she spoke, the artist for the exhibit hadn't shown up which both of the girls were slightly disapointed by. "i would sit in the middle of the room and everyone who passed me would have to give me five bucks," olivia responded, feeling aria rest her head on her shoulder.
"im sorry the artist was a no show," aria spoke after a moment of silence as olivia rested her head on top of aria's, her right hand on aria's bare thigh. "you were the only person i wanted to see today," olivia whispered, her fingers gently dancing over aria's skin, it burned everywhere she touched but aria liked the way it felt.
"i know you just turned sixteen and that we're just stupid teens," aria started, olivia closing her eyes at the sound of her voice, "but i think i wanna spend the rest of my life here,"
"in front of a museum?" there was a slight teasing tone to olivia's voice.
"by your side," aria's words made olivia's eyes flutter open again. "can we live in a cottage in the woods and have brownies everyday and smoke weed all day?" olivia looked at the street ahead but in her head she could see the cottage in the woods with the vines crawling up the side. "because id really like that," she added, voice smooth like silk.
"ill do all of that if it meant we would wake up next to each other every morning and go to sleep next to each other every night," aria felt olivia pull her head away before the redhead faced her, her eyes soft as she placed her hand on aria's cheek again, this time she didn't say anything but peppered soft kisses on the girl's cheeks, across her jaw, the bridge of her nose and finally her lips, "i want that. i want you." she took a small breath, "for the rest of my life." and when they kissed again, the world stopped.
