That very evening, as the moon hung low in the sky, casting a silver glow over the kingdom, Arjun prepared himself for a long night at the borders. The news that they still lacked enough soldiers weighed heavily on him. After finishing their dinner together in the grand dining hall with the family, Arjun turned to Draupadi.
“krishnaa,” he said softly, “I need you to rest tonight. I will be staying at the borders to keep watch. We still don’t have enough soldiers, and with Takshaka lurking, we cannot afford to be careless. He is still angry with us, and he could strike when we least expect it.”
Draupadi looked at her husband, her heart swelling with pride and worry. She knew Arjun’s duties were not just about protecting the borders but also about upholding the very essence of dharma. His commitment to his role as the protector of the kingdom came first. Even though a part of her wished he could stay by her side tonight, she understood the weight of his responsibility.
“I understand, Arya,” she replied gently, her voice full of affection. “Just be careful.”
Krishna, who had been quietly observing the exchange, stepped forward with his characteristic calmness. “I will accompany Parth tonight,” he offered with a serene smile. “After all, two pairs of eyes are better than one. Besides, who better than a friend to share the night’s watch?”
Arjun nodded gratefully to Krishna, knowing that with him by his side, the night would be less lonely and more insightful. Together, they both mounted their horses, the sound of hooves clattering on the cobblestone as they rode into the night, heading toward the kingdom’s borders.
Draupadi stood in the doorway for a few moments, watching them disappear into the distance, the faint glow of their torches flickering until they became one with the darkness. She sighed softly and turned back into the palace. After finishing up the rest of her work, she finally returned to her chamber, her feet dragging from exhaustion.
The large bed stood empty, a reminder of Arjun’s absence. The room felt quieter, stiller, without him. But Draupadi knew that his duties were of utmost importance. He was the chief commander of Indraprastha’s army, and protecting the kingdom was not something he could ignore. She smiled to herself, thinking of how Arjun would never let anyone harm their kingdom, how fiercely he protected everything they held dear.
