DECEPTION

Ch. 20: The Lost Identity.

As I sat in Mrs. Smith's living room, Rachel walked in, her bright smile infectious.

"Hey, girl! How's the bump doing?"

Rachel asked, rubbing her own belly.

I laughed.

"It's doing great, thanks for asking."

Rachel settled beside me.

"I'm so glad we're in this together. It's nice to have someone who understands."

Our conversations flowed easily, and I found myself opening up to Rachel.

"Rachel, can I ask you something?"

I said, curiosity getting the better.

"Shoot, girl!"

Rachel replied.

"How did you...you know, get pregnant? You just arrived, and we can't be pregnant at the same time."

Rachel's expression turned thoughtful.

"Honestly, I don't know. I wasn't with anyone...at least, I don't remember being with anyone....oh, yeah. My fiance, Raymond. I remember I went to his place weeks earlier"

My eyes widened.

"That's not exactly what happened to me."

Rachel nodded.

"I know, right? It's weird. But I'm just grateful for this little miracle."

I studied Rachel's face. She seemed genuinely happy.

"Rachel, do you ever wonder why they're being so nice to me?"

I asked, lowering my voice.

Rachel's brow furrowed.

"Who, Mrs. Smith and the others?"

I nodded.

Rachel leaned in.

"I did wonder, but they're just really kind people, I think."

I wasn't convinced, but Rachel's optimism was contagious.

Just then, Mrs. Smith entered with refreshments.

"Girls, how are you doing today?"

Mrs. Smith asked, beaming.

Rachel smiled.

"We're doing great, thanks to you."

Mrs. Smith's eyes sparkled.

"You're part of our family now. We'll take care of you and those precious babies."

As they fussed over us, I couldn't shake off the feeling that there was more to their kindness than met the eye.

Michael and I sat on a bench at the playing park, enjoying our ice cream.

"I can't believe none of the experts could unlock the drive,"

Michael said, frustration etched on his face.

I sighed.

"I know. It's like it's impossible."

Michael turned to me.
