Zach and Anastasia had barely caught their breath when they heard another noise, this time closer-too close. Footsteps echoed down the hallway, quick and uneven. Zach instinctively moved in front of Anastasia again, his body tensing as they prepared for the worst. But before they could react, a familiar voice cut through the tension.

"Anastasia!"

The voice was urgent, panicked, and unmistakably familiar to Anastasia. She spun around, her heart racing, and saw a figure rushing toward them-her younger sister, Mei.

"Mei!" Anastasia cried, relief washing over her as she ran to meet her sister halfway.

Mei, with her striking heterochromatic eyes-one blue, one grey-looked disheveled, her face pale with fear. At 5'6", she was shorter than Anastasia but still had the same graceful presence. Her hair, usually neatly styled, was wild, and there was a faint streak of blood on her cheek-though it didn't seem to be hers.

Zach watched as the two sisters embraced, their fear momentarily subsiding in the comfort of each other's presence.

"Are you okay? What happened?" Anastasia asked, holding Mei by the shoulders and scanning her face for injuries.

"I-I don't know," Mei stammered, her voice shaking. "I was in the library when everything went crazy. People started attacking each other, and... and I couldn't find you. I tried to call, but-" She paused, glancing at Zach, who stood a few feet away, keeping an eye on the hallway. "Who's he?"

Zach gave a nod, not wanting to interrupt the reunion but aware that they needed to move fast. "We don't have time for introductions. We need to get out of here, now."

Anastasia looked at Mei, her green eyes full of concern. "Stay with us. We'll find a way out together."

Mei nodded quickly, glancing back over her shoulder, her heterochromatic eyes wide with fear. "They're everywhere. The infected-whatever they are. They're all over the school."

Zach's jaw tightened. He could hear the distant groans of the infected getting closer. "Then we stick together. There's an emergency exit near the science wing. If it's clear, we can make a break for it."

He motioned for them to follow him, taking the lead as they carefully moved down the hallway. Anastasia held onto Mei's hand, keeping her sister close. The familiar school hallways that had once been so ordinary now felt like a maze of nightmares. Locker doors hung open, books and bags scattered everywhere as if abandoned mid-run. Every sound made their hearts race, every shadow made them flinch.

"Are Mom and Dad okay?" Mei whispered, her voice trembling.

Anastasia squeezed her hand tighter, her expression grim. "I haven't heard from them since the outbreak started. We'll figure it out once we're out of here."

They rounded the corner, and there it was-the door to the science wing, their potential way out. Zach glanced at the girls, signaling for them to stay back as he approached the door cautiously. He tried the handle, half-expecting it to be locked like the others, but it gave way with a creak.

Relief surged through him-until he saw what lay beyond the door.

A cluster of infected students shambled in the courtyard just beyond the exit, their vacant eyes scanning the area aimlessly. There were too many of them for the three of them to slip by unnoticed.

Zach cursed under his breath and backed away from the door. "It's blocked. We'll have to find another way."

Mei's face fell, her heterochromatic eyes darting nervously. "What are we going to do?"

Anastasia glanced at Zach, then back at her sister. "We keep moving. There has to be another way."

Zach nodded, thinking quickly. "We could head up to the roof. If we're lucky, there might be a way down from there, or at least we can regroup and figure out our next move."

The three of them hurried down the hall, making their way toward the stairwell that led to the roof. The building felt eerily quiet now, save for the occasional distant moans of the infected. Every second felt like a ticking clock counting down to when they would come face-to-face with the danger again.

As they reached the stairs, Zach motioned for the girls to follow him. "Stay close. We don't know what we'll find up there."

They moved up the stairwell quickly but cautiously, each step creaking under their weight. Zach reached the door to the roof first and gave it a quick push-it swung open easily, revealing the open sky above them.

The three of them stepped out onto the roof, the cool air hitting their faces. For a brief moment, they felt a strange sense of freedom, being above the chaos below. The city stretched out around them, but even from up here, they could see the signs of the apocalypse-smoke rising from the distance, the sound of sirens wailing faintly in the background.

Mei stepped forward, gazing out at the horizon, her grey and blue eyes reflecting the devastation. "Is it like this everywhere?"

Zach stood beside her, his gaze hard. "I don't know. But whatever this is, it's spreading fast."

Anastasia joined them, her hand resting on Mei's shoulder. "We'll figure it out. We just need to stay together."

Zach glanced at Anastasia, something unspoken passing between them. In the midst of the chaos, they had found a sense of unity. He wasn't sure why, but he felt a deep responsibility to protect them-both of them.

"We'll survive this," Zach said, his voice firm. "We just have to keep moving."

Mei nodded, though fear still flickered in her eyes. Anastasia tightened her grip on her sister's hand, her green eyes meeting Zach's. "We will. Together."

As the sun began to set, casting an orange glow over the horizon, the three of them stood on the rooftop, watching the world they once knew crumble below. But in that moment, they had each other, and that was enough-for now.
