The days had grown quieter as the group settled into a temporary routine. Sheltered in the treehouse Jungkook had led them to, they found a semblance of peace, though the ever-present threat of the undead still lingered in the background. Aradhya and Jungkook had grown closer over the past few weeks, their love deepening with each passing day. Their bond was a beacon of hope in the midst of the chaos, offering a reminder that even in the darkest times, love could still bloom.
One afternoon, as the sun began to dip behind the forest canopy, the group gathered around the small fire. Anastasia sat quietly, her thoughts still consumed by Zach’s brief return and his subsequent disappearance. She hadn’t told anyone about their encounter that night—about the kiss, the connection they had shared. It was too painful to relive, especially since Zach had left once again.
Jungkook sat beside Aradhya, his hand intertwined with hers. They were inseparable now, their love a source of strength for both of them. Aradhya’s face lit up whenever Jungkook was near, her once-quiet demeanor replaced by a newfound confidence and joy. They leaned into each other, whispering quietly, sharing smiles that brightened even the most somber moments.
Mei, always sharp-eyed, noticed Anastasia’s distraction and nudged her. “You okay?” she asked, her heterochromatic eyes scanning Anastasia’s face with concern.
Anastasia gave her a weak smile. “Yeah… just thinking.”
“You’ve been doing a lot of that lately,” Mei said, not pressing but clearly worried. “You know you can talk to us, right?”
Before Anastasia could respond, a rustling sound came from the edge of the forest. The group immediately tensed, each one of them ready to leap into action. Jungkook and Yeong Do were the first to stand, their weapons drawn.
“What is it?” Aradhya asked, her voice filled with tension.
Jungkook narrowed his eyes, scanning the treeline. “Something’s out there.”
They waited in silence, the crackling of the fire the only sound. And then, out of the shadows, a tall figure emerged.
Anastasia’s heart skipped a beat as Zach stepped into the clearing, his piercing blue eyes catching the firelight. He looked different—hardened, scarred, but unmistakably him. The group stood frozen, unsure of how to react.
“Zach,” Jungkook said, his voice a mix of surprise and wariness.
Zach nodded slightly, his gaze sweeping over the group before landing on Anastasia. For a moment, everything else disappeared. She stood up slowly, her eyes locked onto his.
“I’m back,” Zach said, his voice low but steady. “The bandits… they’re gone. They won’t be a problem anymore.”
Anastasia felt her heart race as she processed his words. Zach had been fighting on his own, taking down the threats that had loomed over them. He had done it for them—for her.
Jungkook, still cautious, stepped forward. “You killed them? All of them?”
Zach nodded. “Every last one.”
There was a moment of silence before Yeong Do let out a low whistle. “Well, damn. That’s impressive.”
Aradhya, her hand still clasped in Jungkook’s, gave Zach a small smile. “Thank you,” she said softly. “For protecting us.”
Zach’s eyes flicked to Aradhya and Jungkook, and for the first time, a hint of a smile touched his lips. “You two look happy,” he remarked, his voice carrying a softness that surprised Anastasia.
Aradhya blushed, glancing at Jungkook, who grinned at her before pulling her closer. “Yeah,” Jungkook said, “I guess we are.”
Mei chuckled, her usual playful energy returning. “They’re inseparable. It’s honestly kind of gross sometimes,” she teased, though the affection in her voice was clear.
Aradhya playfully nudged Mei. “Oh, like you’re one to talk. You’ve been spending a lot of time with Yeong Do lately.”
Yeong Do raised an eyebrow, smirking. “I can’t help it if she likes my company.”
Mei rolled her eyes but smiled. “You wish.”
The banter brought a lightness to the air, a stark contrast to the tension that had been building before Zach’s return. But Anastasia couldn’t take her eyes off him. He had come back. After everything, he had come back to them.
She took a step toward him, her voice barely above a whisper. “Zach…”
He met her gaze, and for the first time since his return, something softened in his expression. “Ana,” he said quietly, using the nickname he had always called her by. “I’m sorry.”
Tears welled up in her eyes as she closed the distance between them. “You don’t have to be. You’re here now. That’s all that matters.”
For a moment, they just stood there, the weight of everything that had passed between them hanging in the air. And then, without warning, Zach pulled her into his arms. Anastasia melted into his embrace, her heart soaring with relief. He was back. He was finally back.
That night, as the group sat around the fire, the mood was lighter than it had been in weeks. Zach had rejoined them, and for the first time in a long while, they felt a sense of hope.
Aradhya rested her head on Jungkook’s shoulder, their quiet conversation filled with soft laughter and stolen glances. Mei and Yeong Do bickered playfully, their friendship deepening with each passing day. And Zach, though quieter than usual, sat beside Anastasia, their hands intertwined under the cover of darkness.
As the fire crackled and the stars twinkled above them, Anastasia leaned her head on Zach’s shoulder, her heart full. They had been through so much, but somehow, they had made it here—together.
“I missed you,” she whispered, her voice barely audible.
Zach squeezed her hand gently. “I missed you too,” he replied, his voice rough with emotion.
In that moment, surrounded by the warmth of the fire and the love of their newfound family, Anastasia knew that whatever challenges lay ahead, they would face them together.
And for now, that was enough.
