The next morning dawned with an unsettling calm. The sun filtered through the trees, casting dappled shadows on the ground as the group emerged from the cabin. After a long night filled with conversations and reconnecting, the tension that had hung over them seemed to have dissipated, replaced by a sense of determination.

Zach stood by the entrance, his blue eyes scanning the surroundings. The woods were still and quiet, but he could feel the weight of the world pressing down on him. He had made a promise to protect his friends, but the dangers they faced were far from over.

“Alright, everyone,” he said, turning to the group. “We need a plan. We can’t just sit around here waiting for trouble to find us.”

Anastasia stepped forward, her green eyes sparkling with determination. “We should head to the old high school. If it’s still standing, it could be a good place to regroup and fortify.”

Yeong Do, who had been sharpening his knives, looked up. “The high school? It’s a good idea, but it’s also risky. We need to be careful. There could be more zombies—or worse—bandits looking for easy targets.”

Aradhya nodded in agreement. “We should scout ahead first, make sure it’s safe before we head in.”

Jungkook, still feeling the rush of excitement from his newfound friendships, chimed in. “I can go with you guys. I’m not afraid to take on a few zombies!”

Zach glanced at him, impressed by his enthusiasm. “Alright. Let’s do a quick recon. Aradhya, Jungkook, and I will head out first. The rest of you stay here and keep an eye on Mei. If anything happens, shout for help.”

Mei, who had been quietly observing, piped up with a serious expression. “I can handle myself too, you know. I want to come.”

Zach hesitated for a moment, then softened his stance. “Okay, but stick close to us. We need to keep you safe.”

The group gathered their supplies, preparing for the day ahead. As they ventured deeper into the woods, Zach couldn’t help but glance at Anastasia. Their bond had only strengthened after last night, and the memory of their whispered confessions warmed him from the inside.

After a short hike, they arrived at the outskirts of the old high school. The building loomed before them, partially covered in vines and overgrown weeds. Broken windows stared out like empty eyes, and the air was thick with an eerie silence.

“Looks like it’s been abandoned for a while,” Aradhya said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Jungkook nodded, his excitement palpable. “Let’s check it out!”

Zach took the lead, gesturing for the others to follow closely. As they approached the entrance, he could feel the tension mounting. The smell of decay wafted through the air, a grim reminder of the world outside.

“Stay alert,” he warned, stepping through the broken doorway. The interior was dim, with sunlight filtering in through the cracked windows, illuminating dust motes floating lazily in the air.

The hallway was eerily quiet, save for the sound of their footsteps echoing against the tile floor. Zach led the way, scanning the area for any signs of danger.

Suddenly, a noise echoed from one of the classrooms—a soft thud followed by a shuffling sound. The group froze, exchanging worried glances.

“What was that?” Mei whispered, her eyes wide with fear.

“Zombies,” Zach replied, his voice steady. “Stay behind me.”

He pushed the classroom door open cautiously, and they peered inside. To their surprise, they found not zombies, but a small group of people huddled together. They looked ragged and weary, and their eyes widened in shock when they saw Zach and the others.
