The forest was quiet, save for the crunch of leaves beneath their feet as the group moved cautiously through the undergrowth. After the brutal encounter with the bandits, tension hung heavy in the air. No one spoke as they pressed on, their eyes scanning the dense trees for any sign of danger. Zach led the group, his expression as unreadable as ever. Anastasia kept close to him, the weight of the unspoken words between them growing heavier with each step.
As night fell, they found shelter in a small abandoned cabin nestled deep within the woods. It was cramped, but safe. They set up camp inside, grateful for the brief respite. The fire crackled in the middle of the room, casting flickering shadows on the worn wooden walls.
Aradhya leaned against Jungkook, their quiet conversations and shared smiles a reminder of the love they had found amidst the chaos. Mei sat by the door, ever-watchful, while Yeong Do sharpened his knife in silence. Anastasia glanced at Zach, who sat apart from the group, staring into the flames. His brooding presence hadn’t gone unnoticed, and she could feel the tension radiating off of him.
Unable to take the silence any longer, Anastasia finally spoke. “Zach… I need to know. The hooded figure—the one with the blue eyes… was it you?”
Everyone looked up, their attention drawn to the question. The air seemed to thicken as they waited for Zach’s response.
Zach didn’t move for a long moment. His piercing blue eyes remained fixed on the fire, his jaw clenched tight. Then, with a sigh, he nodded.
“It was me,” he said, his voice low but clear. “I’ve been the one killing the zombies… and the men.”
Anastasia felt a shiver run down her spine. She had suspected as much, but hearing him admit it out loud was different. She had seen him change since the beginning of the apocalypse, but this revelation—this side of him—was something she hadn’t fully grasped until now.
Jungkook’s brow furrowed as he leaned forward. “You… you’re the one who’s been walking among the zombies? The one I heard rumors about?”
Zach nodded again, his gaze still distant. “Yeah. I’ve been out there… doing what I had to do.”
Aradhya’s voice was soft but steady. “But why? Why go off on your own like that?”
Zach’s eyes flicked to her, then back to the fire. “Because someone had to. After I left… after everything that happened, I couldn’t stay with the group. I needed to protect you all, but I couldn’t be near you. Not after I got bit.”
Anastasia’s heart skipped a beat. “Bit?”
Zach’s jaw tightened. “It didn’t take. I don’t know why. Maybe I’m immune, or maybe I got lucky. But when I didn’t turn… I knew I had a purpose. I could move among them. They didn’t notice me. I realized I could use it to my advantage.”
Mei’s voice broke through the tension, her eyes wide with shock. “So you’ve been living out there, killing zombies? And people?”
Zach met her gaze, his expression hard. “Not just anyone. Only those who deserved it.”
The room fell silent as his words hung in the air. Zach’s eyes darkened as he continued, his voice rough with emotion.
“The bandits, the people who prey on the weak… they’re worse than the zombies. I’ve seen what they do—what they’re capable of. I couldn’t just stand by and let them hurt innocent people. So I stopped them. One by one.”
Jungkook nodded slowly, his respect for Zach deepening. “That’s why we found all those bodies. You’ve been cleaning up the scum.”
Zach didn’t respond, but the weight of his actions was clear. He had taken on the role of judge, jury, and executioner in a world where law and order no longer existed. It was a burden he had carried alone, and now, finally, he was sharing it with the group.
Anastasia felt her throat tighten as she looked at him. She could see the toll it had taken on him—the loneliness, the guilt, the constant fight for survival. But she also saw the man she had fallen in love with, the one who would do anything to protect those he cared about.
“Zach,” she said softly, moving closer to him. “You don’t have to do this alone anymore.”
Zach’s eyes flicked to hers, and for the first time since his return, his hardened expression cracked. The pain he had been holding back for so long was clear in his gaze.
“I didn’t want to drag you into this,” he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. “I didn’t want you to see me like this.”
Anastasia knelt beside him, taking his hand in hers. “I don’t care what you’ve done. I care about you. We’re in this together, remember?”
For a moment, Zach didn’t respond. Then, slowly, he turned to face her, his piercing blue eyes softening. He reached out, cupping her face in his hand, his thumb gently brushing her cheek.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered. “For leaving you. For everything.”
Anastasia leaned into his touch, her heart aching with a mix of love and relief. “You’re here now. That’s all that matters.”
Zach’s eyes filled with emotion as he pulled her closer, their foreheads touching. The fire crackled softly in the background, but in that moment, it was just the two of them. The world outside faded away as they shared a quiet, intimate moment of understanding.
“I love you, Ana,” Zach murmured, his voice raw with feeling.
Anastasia’s heart swelled as she whispered back, “I love you too, Zach.”
The group watched the exchange in respectful silence, the bond between Zach and Anastasia undeniable. It was a moment of hope in the midst of a world that had long since lost its way.
After a few minutes, Mei broke the silence, her voice light but curious. “So… what now? You’re just going to keep being this blue-eyed vigilante?”
Zach chuckled softly, though there was still a weight in his voice. “I don’t know. I can’t go back to how things were. But I’ll stay with you all—for now.”
Jungkook smiled, resting his arm around Aradhya’s shoulders. “We could use someone like you. You’re a good ally to have.”
Aradhya nodded, her eyes filled with admiration for Zach. “And a friend.”
Zach’s expression softened as he looked at the group. For the first time in a long while, he felt a sense of belonging—a reminder that, even in a world ravaged by death and chaos, there were still people worth fighting for.
As the night wore on, the group relaxed, the fire casting a warm glow over them. Zach leaned back against the wall, his hand entwined with Anastasia’s, a small smile on his lips.
For the first time in months, he allowed himself to feel at peace.
But deep down, they all knew that the fight wasn’t over.
There were still battles to be fought, enemies to face, and a world to rebuild.
And together, they would face whatever came next.
