unstable ground

The group trudged through the thick forest, their steps weary after the battle in the bunker. Every now and then, the distant groans of zombies echoed through the trees, reminding them that danger was never far. But for now, they had a moment to catch their breath.

Aradhya walked close to Jungkook, their fingers brushing together in a subtle show of affection. Mei, sharp-eyed as always, kept scanning the area with a wary gaze. Yeong Do moved like a shadow, his expression unreadable, yet his presence always reassuring. At the front of the group, Zach led them forward, though Anastasia stayed close by his side, her heart still pounding from their last kiss.

The tension between them was undeniable now, but neither had found the right words to address it. Zach stole a glance at her, his piercing blue eyes softening for just a moment. He remembered how it felt to kiss her, to make that silent promise in the middle of chaos. But now, there was no room for vulnerability—not yet.

“What’s the plan?” Yeong Do asked, his voice cutting through the quiet.

“We’ll need a new base,” Zach said, scanning the horizon. “The zombies are changing, and we’ve seen what they’re capable of. We need somewhere fortified—somewhere they can’t get to easily.”

Jungkook nodded in agreement. “I know a place. I passed through a large bunker deep in the forest a few weeks ago, right before I met you all. It looked untouched and secure. If we can get there, it might give us the advantage we need.”

“Great,” Mei chimed in, though her voice was laced with skepticism. “Let’s just hope it’s not crawling with more of those creatures.”

As they moved deeper into the forest, Anastasia drifted closer to Zach, her green eyes flickering with unspoken thoughts. “Zach,” she whispered, “about earlier…”

Zach’s heart skipped a beat. He knew what was coming, and part of him was afraid of it. Afraid of the conversation, afraid of the feelings he couldn’t deny anymore.

“I didn’t think you were coming back,” she admitted quietly. “I’ve seen so many people disappear, and when you walked out there…I just—”

“Anastasia,” Zach interrupted softly, stopping her in her tracks. He turned to face her, taking her hands in his. His gaze was intense but filled with warmth. “I will always come back. I’ll fight for you, for everyone, no matter what. But this world... it’s cruel. I need you to understand that sometimes, we might not have control.”

Anastasia’s breath hitched, but she didn’t look away. “I don’t care about the world, Zach. I care about you.”

Zach’s chest tightened. He leaned down, resting his forehead against hers. The weight of the moment hung between them, heavy and fragile. “I care about you too,” he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “More than you know.”

They stood there, lost in each other for what felt like an eternity, the chaos of the outside world falling away. But the sound of a twig snapping nearby brought them back to reality.

“Lovebirds, we’ve got company,” Yeong Do called out, his voice low and urgent.

Zach and Anastasia immediately broke apart, their senses snapping to alertness. Up ahead, in the clearing beyond the trees, they saw them—men. Armed, grim-faced men with the same insignia as the ones they had encountered before.

“Damn it,” Jungkook cursed under his breath. “They’ve found us.”

The men fanned out, clearly intent on surrounding the group. There was no running this time. Zach’s jaw clenched, the familiar fire of battle flaring up inside him. But there was something different now—something new simmering beneath the surface.

“I thought we got rid of these creeps,” Mei muttered, her hand resting on her weapon.

“Looks like we missed a few,” Aradhya added grimly, her voice steady despite the danger. She exchanged a quick glance with Jungkook, who nodded, readying his stance.

Zach narrowed his eyes, stepping forward with Anastasia beside him. The tension between the two sides was thick, and it only took one word to shatter the silence.

“Surrender, and maybe we’ll go easy on you,” one of the men called out, smirking.

Zach’s lip curled into a snarl. “You should have stayed away.”

Before anyone could blink, Zach stepped forward, his eyes glowing with that otherworldly intensity. The moment stretched, and the air seemed to thrum with something unnatural. The ground beneath the men began to tremble, and from the distance, the unmistakable groans of zombies echoed once more.

“What the—” one of the men started, but it was too late.

Zombies poured in from all sides, but they didn’t attack Zach or his group. Instead, they obeyed him, moving with frightening precision toward the men. The invaders panicked, firing wildly into the horde, but it was no use. The undead overwhelmed them, ripping through their ranks with savage efficiency.

Zach watched, his face cold and unyielding, as the zombies did his bidding. Beside him, Anastasia’s breath caught. She had seen Zach control the undead before, but never like this. There was a power in him now, something darker, something he hadn’t fully revealed.

When the last of the men fell, torn apart by the zombies, Zach turned back to his group. His eyes, still glowing faintly, returned to their normal piercing blue. He took a deep breath, as if shaking off the weight of what he had just done.

“Let’s move,” he said, his voice hard but quiet. “We don’t have much time before more of them come.”

Anastasia placed a hand on his arm, her eyes searching his face. “Zach... what was that?”

Zach’s gaze softened when he looked at her, but the shadows still lingered in his expression. “I did what I had to. Those men... they weren’t going to let us go. I couldn’t risk losing any of you.”

Aradhya and Jungkook exchanged a glance, clearly impressed but also wary of what they had just witnessed. Mei, always the pragmatist, simply nodded.

“Whatever it was, it worked,” she said. “Let’s not question it for now.”

Zach glanced at the group, then turned back to the path ahead. “Jungkook, lead the way. Let’s find that bunker.”

As they moved forward, Anastasia stayed close to Zach, her mind swirling with questions. The man she loved was changing, and though she didn’t fully understand what was happening, she knew one thing for certain: she wasn’t going to let him face it alone.
