The streets echoed with the sounds of their rapid footsteps, the thud of zombies trailing close behind them. Zach glanced over his shoulder, gripping Anastasia’s hand tighter. The horde was larger than they anticipated, with their grotesque, rotting faces filled with hunger. Yet, Zach felt no fear—just the burning determination to survive.

Anastasia’s voice cut through his focus. “We need to find cover! We can’t outrun them forever.”

Yeong Do sprinted ahead, scanning the surroundings. “Up ahead! There’s an alleyway. We can bottleneck them there.”

“Let’s move!” Zach called, leading the charge, refusing to let the creatures get too close. Mei and Aradhya ran at the rear, weapons ready to strike any undead that got within reach.

They slid into the narrow alley, the walls of two crumbling buildings closing in around them. Zach turned to face the entrance, bat raised, his eyes fixed on the approaching horde.

“We hold them here,” he said, breathing hard. “We don’t let them pass.”

Yeong Do, standing at Zach’s side, slammed his crowbar against the ground. “I’ve been waiting for this.”

The first wave of zombies stumbled into the alley, their growls echoing off the walls. Zach stepped forward, bringing his bat down on the first one’s head with a sickening crack. Beside him, Anastasia slashed at another with the hunting knife Zach had given her, slicing through its neck with practiced ease.

Mei grinned, her heterochromatic eyes gleaming with the thrill of battle. “Come on! Is that all you got?” she shouted as she drove her knife into a zombie’s chest.

Aradhya, her long black hair whipping in the wind, swung her bat with deadly precision. “Let’s make this quick!”

Zach and the others fought like a well-oiled machine, their movements synchronized as they held the zombies back, one after another. Yeong Do’s strength and speed were unmatched as he crushed skulls with brutal efficiency. Anastasia fought with grace, her green eyes sharp and focused, every strike filled with purpose.

Despite the chaos, Zach couldn’t help but steal a glance at Anastasia. She moved like a warrior, fierce and unyielding, and it stirred something deep inside him. In the midst of this nightmare, she had become his anchor—someone worth fighting for, worth living for.

Anastasia caught his gaze and gave him a quick, confident smile. “Focus, Drake,” she teased, swinging her knife at another zombie. “We’re not done yet.”

Zach smirked, wiping sweat from his brow. “I’m always focused.”

“On me, maybe,” she quipped, dodging a zombie’s grasp.

Mei let out a laugh between strikes. “Get a room, you two!”

Zach chuckled but kept his attention on the oncoming horde. His bat swung through the air, meeting flesh and bone as more zombies fell at their feet. The alley was filling with bodies, the ground slick with blood, but they didn’t falter.

Then, suddenly, the tide of zombies slowed. The once-relentless wave had begun to thin, their numbers dwindling as the group’s fierce resistance overwhelmed them.

“We’re almost through!” Aradhya shouted, her voice filled with excitement. “Keep going!”

A final surge of undead lurched toward them, but Zach, Anastasia, Yeong Do, Mei, and Aradhya stood united, their weapons flashing in the dim light as they brought down the last of the attackers. The alley fell silent, save for their heavy breathing and the distant sounds of the city in ruin.

Zach let out a deep breath, lowering his bat. He wiped the blood from his hands and turned to face the others. “We did it.”

Anastasia stepped closer, her eyes softening as she looked at him. “You were incredible out there.”

Zach shrugged, a grin tugging at his lips. “I had a good partner.”

Anastasia chuckled, stepping even closer until they were inches apart. The intensity of the battle faded, replaced by something else—something quieter, yet just as powerful. “We make a pretty good team, don’t we?”

Zach nodded, his heart pounding for a different reason now. “Yeah. The best.”

Without another word, Anastasia reached up, her fingers brushing lightly against his cheek. Zach felt his breath catch in his throat as he leaned into her touch, his eyes locked on hers. The world around them seemed to disappear, leaving just the two of them standing amidst the aftermath of the fight.

“I’m not going anywhere, Zach,” she whispered, her voice barely audible but filled with emotion. “No matter how bad things get, I’m staying by your side.”

Zach swallowed hard, his hand reaching out to cup the back of her neck, pulling her gently toward him. “I don’t want to lose you,” he murmured, his voice raw with emotion.

“You won’t,” Anastasia promised, her green eyes filled with certainty.

And then, before he could stop himself, Zach closed the distance between them, his lips pressing against hers in a fierce, desperate kiss. Anastasia responded immediately, her arms wrapping around his neck as she kissed him back with equal intensity.

For a moment, there was nothing but the two of them, standing in the aftermath of chaos, their love burning bright in the darkness.

Mei’s voice broke the silence. “Okay, now really get a room.”

Aradhya let out a laugh, crossing her arms. “I’d say they’ve earned it.”

Zach and Anastasia pulled apart, both of them laughing breathlessly. Zach ran a hand through his hair, grinning. “Sorry about that.”

“Don’t apologize,” Yeong Do said, smirking. “You two deserve a break after that.”

Anastasia blushed slightly but didn’t step away from Zach. She kept her hand in his, holding on tightly as if to remind herself that he was real—that they were both still standing.

“Let’s keep moving,” Zach said, though his voice was softer now. “We need to find a safer place to regroup.”

Mei nodded. “Yeah, before any more of those creeps show up.”

The group moved forward, navigating through the narrow streets with renewed determination. Despite the grim reality they faced, there was a palpable sense of hope in the air—a hope that hadn’t been there before.

As they walked, Anastasia leaned in closer to Zach, her voice low. “You really are a softie, aren’t you?”

Zach laughed quietly, squeezing her hand. “Only with you.”

She smiled, resting her head on his shoulder as they continued their journey. The world around them might have been falling apart, but in that moment, it didn’t matter. They had each other, and that was enough to keep fighting.

Whatever dangers awaited them, they would face it together. Fearless and united.
