The days in the treehouse passed with a sense of routine the group hadn’t felt in a long time. With the forest providing some natural cover, the constant threat of zombies felt more distant, giving them a much-needed break from the relentless terror of the outside world. But even with the relative peace, things were changing—new dynamics slowly taking shape within the group.
Aradhya, usually calm and focused, found herself drawn to Jungkook in a way she hadn’t expected. At first, she had been wary of him, a stranger with an unknown past. But as they worked together to keep the group safe, she couldn’t deny the connection she felt. His quiet strength, his sharp mind, and his ability to stay calm in the face of danger intrigued her. The more she got to know him, the more she saw the depth behind his mysterious exterior.
One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting the treehouse in a soft, golden light, Aradhya sat beside Jungkook on the balcony, gazing out at the dense forest below.
“You’re not like most people,” she said, her voice soft but steady.
Jungkook glanced at her, his dark eyes curious. “What makes you say that?”
Aradhya smiled, tucking a strand of her long black hair behind her ear. “You don’t just survive. You seem like you have a purpose. Like you’re waiting for something.”
Jungkook looked away, the faintest hint of a smile on his lips. “Maybe I am.”
There was a comfortable silence between them, the kind that had become increasingly rare in the chaos of the apocalypse. Aradhya could feel her heart beating a little faster, the pull between them growing stronger. And though neither said it aloud, the bond they shared was deepening.
Inside the treehouse, Anastasia sat by the small fire, Mei leaning against her shoulder. They’d been quiet for a while, both lost in their own thoughts. But ever since Jungkook had arrived, Anastasia couldn’t stop thinking about Zach. The ache of not knowing what had happened to him had only grown stronger.
Breaking the silence, Anastasia looked across the room at Jungkook. “You’ve been out here alone for a while, haven’t you?”
Jungkook nodded, looking up from the map he’d been marking. “Yeah, about six months. Why?”
“There was something you mentioned the other day,” Anastasia said slowly, her green eyes searching his face. “You said you met someone. A... strange person. Can you tell me more about that?”
The rest of the group turned their attention to Jungkook, sensing the importance of what Anastasia was asking. Jungkook leaned back, resting his arms on his knees, his gaze thoughtful.
“I came across him about three weeks ago,” he began. “I was scouting near an old town when I noticed something... off. I saw this guy—tall, strong, with piercing blue eyes. He was walking right among a horde of zombies, like they didn’t even see him.”
Anastasia’s breath caught, her heart pounding. “Blue eyes?” she whispered.
Jungkook nodded. “Yeah. It was weird. I thought he’d get torn apart, but instead, he fought them off like it was nothing. He didn’t just survive—he hunted them. The way he moved... it was like he was born to kill those things.”
Yeong Do, who had been listening quietly, raised an eyebrow. “And he didn’t speak to you?”
“I tried talking to him,” Jungkook replied, shaking his head. “But he wasn’t interested in making friends. Just disappeared before I could ask him anything. But I’ve seen him since then—just glimpses. He’s a ghost, moving in and out of the shadows.”
Anastasia’s chest tightened. Could it really be Zach? Her mind raced with possibilities. If Zach had somehow survived, had the infection changed him in some way? She knew he was strong, a fighter, but walking among zombies like that was... unnatural.
“Do you think he’s still out there?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Jungkook shrugged. “I don’t know. But if anyone could survive this long alone, it’s him.”
Anastasia felt a surge of hope. “We need to find him.”
Mei, sitting beside her, looked concerned. “Ana, we don’t even know if it’s Zach. It could be someone else.”
“I know,” Anastasia replied, her voice firm. “But I can’t just let it go. I need to know for sure.”
Yeong Do sighed, glancing at Aradhya, who looked equally conflicted. “It’s a long shot, Ana. We don’t have a lot of resources left, and we’ve got to think about keeping the group safe.”
“I get that,” Anastasia said, standing up, her green eyes burning with determination. “But Zach might be out there. If there’s even a chance that it’s him, I’m going to find him.”
Aradhya, who had been quiet during the conversation, finally spoke up. “She’s right. If we can find this guy, maybe he can help us too. From what Jungkook described, he sounds like someone we want on our side.”
Jungkook nodded in agreement. “He’s a force of nature, that’s for sure. If you’re going after him, you’ll need to be careful. He doesn’t trust easily.”
Anastasia turned to the group, her resolve unshakable. “I’m asking you all to come with me. We’ve been through hell together. I know this is a risk, but I have to do this.”
The room was quiet for a moment as everyone considered her words. Mei was the first to break the silence. “I’m with you, Ana. I miss him too.”
Yeong Do rubbed his chin, then sighed. “Alright, I’m in. But if things go sideways, we turn back.”
Aradhya glanced at Jungkook, her gaze lingering on him for a moment before she spoke. “If you think this guy could help us, I’m in. Besides... we all need hope, right?”
Jungkook, feeling the weight of their eyes on him, gave a small nod. “I’ll guide you. But remember—whoever this guy is, he’s dangerous. We have to be smart about this.”
The decision was made. The group would set out the next morning to find the mysterious man with the blue eyes—the man Anastasia believed could be Zach. Her heart was a storm of emotions—fear, hope, and the overwhelming desire to see him again. She knew it was a long shot, but she couldn’t let go of the idea that Zach had somehow survived, that he was still out there, fighting his way through the apocalypse.
As the night settled in, Anastasia lay awake, staring at the ceiling of the treehouse. In the bunk across from her, Mei was already asleep, her soft breathing filling the quiet space. But Anastasia couldn’t rest, not with the possibility of seeing Zach again swirling in her mind.
Just as she was about to close her eyes, she heard soft footsteps behind her. Turning her head, she saw Jungkook leaning against the doorframe, watching her with his usual calm demeanor.
“You think it’s him, don’t you?” he asked quietly, stepping closer.
“I don’t know,” Anastasia admitted, sitting up. “But I have to try. I need to know.”
Jungkook nodded, his expression thoughtful. “I get it. Just be prepared for whatever we find out there.”
Anastasia gave him a small smile, appreciating his honesty. “Thanks for helping us. For helping me.”
Jungkook shrugged, but there was a warmth in his gaze. “We’re in this together now.”
As he walked away, Anastasia lay back down, her heart still racing with thoughts of Zach. Tomorrow, they’d set out to find him—or at least, to find out if the man with the blue eyes was really him.
And whatever they discovered, she knew it would change everything.
