The morning sun crept over the horizon, casting a soft glow over the mansion’s crumbling walls. The group had gathered in silence, packing up their supplies and preparing to leave. Zach stood by the window, staring out into the desolate streets, lost in thought. His mind kept drifting back to the zombie from the night before, the growing danger around them, and the looming sense that something was about to go terribly wrong.

Anastasia came up behind him, resting her hand on his arm. “You okay?”

Zach turned to her, his expression softer when he met her eyes. “Yeah, just thinking about our next move.”

She gave him a small smile, though worry flickered behind her green eyes. “We’ll figure it out. We always do.”

He nodded, trying to shake the gnawing unease that clung to him. “Let’s get out of here.”

They gathered their things, ready to move on. Mei, Yeong Do, and Aradhya were already by the door, waiting for Zach and Anastasia. The plan was simple: head for the countryside, avoid any hordes along the way, and find a safe place to regroup.

But the world had other plans.

As they exited the mansion, Zach was the first to hear the low growling in the distance. His body tensed as his piercing blue eyes scanned the area. Emerging from a side street, a small group of zombies had caught their scent, moving toward them with disturbing speed.

“Run!” Zach shouted, pulling Anastasia with him as they bolted down the road.

The others followed suit, their footsteps pounding the pavement as the undead closed in behind them. The group darted through narrow alleys, weaving through abandoned cars and debris. But no matter how fast they ran, the zombies seemed to be getting closer.

Zach, leading the charge, felt a sudden sharp pain in his leg. His stride faltered as he looked down to see a zombie had lunged from a hidden corner and sunk its teeth into his calf. The world seemed to slow down in that moment—the searing pain, the realization of what had happened, and the dread that followed.

Anastasia screamed. “Zach!”

Without hesitation, Yeong Do slashed the zombie’s head off with his machete, but the damage was already done.

Zach staggered back, his face pale but resolute. “I’m fine,” he lied, knowing full well what a bite meant in this world.

Mei, Aradhya, and Yeong Do stopped, their faces grim as they understood the gravity of the situation. Silence fell over the group, and in that stillness, the reality hit them all at once. Zach was bitten. There was no coming back from this.

“No...” Anastasia whispered, shaking her head as tears welled up in her eyes. “No, this can’t be happening.”

Zach forced a smile, though his heart was breaking inside. “It’s okay, Ana. You all have to keep moving. You need to survive.”

“We’re not leaving you!” Anastasia cried, grabbing his arm, refusing to let go. “We can find help—there has to be something we can do!”

Zach cupped her face with his hands, his voice gentle but firm. “You know there’s no cure. I’m not risking any of you for this.”

The others stood by, their faces filled with sorrow but knowing Zach was right. They couldn’t stay. They couldn’t save him.

Yeong Do spoke up, his voice low. “We need to move. The longer we wait, the more danger we’re in.”

Anastasia shook her head in disbelief, her tears falling freely now. “No, please... Zach, I can’t—”

“You can,” Zach whispered, his forehead pressing against hers. “You have to. For me.”

The group was silent, the weight of their decision pressing down on them. Mei wiped her tears, biting her lip to hold back sobs. Aradhya, though stoic, had tears glistening in her eyes. Yeong Do clenched his fists, his jaw tight, hating that there was no other way.

Zach’s grip on Anastasia’s hand tightened as he led her a few steps away from the others. “I need you to do something for me,” he said softly.

“What is it?” Anastasia asked, her voice breaking.

“I want you to remember this moment—not the pain, not the fear. Remember me, right here, loving you.” His voice wavered, but he stayed strong for her. “I need you to live, Ana. Don’t let this world take away your heart.”

Anastasia choked on a sob, but she nodded. “I love you, Zach. I... I love you so much.”

Zach’s eyes softened as he leaned in, capturing her lips in a tender, heartbreaking kiss. It was a kiss filled with everything unsaid, every future they’d never have, and all the love that had bloomed between them. When they finally pulled apart, Anastasia was trembling, her hands still clutching him as if she could keep him there by sheer will alone.

“I love you too,” Zach whispered. “More than anything.”

They stood there for a moment, holding each other in the quiet of the apocalypse, as if the world wasn’t falling apart around them.

Then, with a deep breath, Zach gently pushed her toward the others. “Go.”

Anastasia didn’t want to move, didn’t want to leave him, but Yeong Do grabbed her hand and began pulling her away. “We have to go now.”

Mei, tears streaming down her face, whispered, “I’m sorry, Zach.”

Aradhya nodded, her voice thick with emotion. “We won’t forget you.”

Zach smiled at them, standing tall despite the pain coursing through his body. “I’ll hold them off. You guys keep going. Don’t look back.”

They didn’t want to. None of them did. But they turned, and with heavy hearts, they left Zach behind as they disappeared into the distance.

Zach limped through the streets, finding an old, abandoned building a few blocks away. He pushed through the door, staggering into the quiet, dark space. His leg throbbed, and he could already feel the fever setting in. The infection was spreading fast.

He barricaded the door as best he could, then slumped against the wall, breathing heavily. His mind raced with thoughts of Anastasia, of their final kiss, of everything he would never get to experience with her. But there was peace in knowing she was safe, that she had a chance.

The building was silent, save for the occasional distant groans of zombies outside. Zach sat there, watching the light fade as the day turned to night. His body weakened with every passing minute, but his thoughts remained sharp, focused on the people he loved.

What would happen to him was uncertain. He could feel the infection raging inside him, but his will to fight remained. Maybe he would turn. Maybe he wouldn’t. Either way, his fate was now a mystery—left to the silence of the world around him.

As the group continued their journey, they walked in somber silence. Anastasia’s heart ached with every step, knowing Zach was somewhere behind them, alone. She wiped her tears, her thoughts consumed with memories of him, their shared moments, and their goodbye kiss.

But deep down, she held onto one small spark of hope. Maybe, just maybe, Zach had found a way to survive.

And until she knew for sure, his fate would remain a mystery.
