Zach, Yeong Do, and Aradhya made their way cautiously through the desolate streets. The eerie silence weighed heavily on them as they scouted the perimeter for signs of zombies or any remaining supplies. The occasional distant groan of the undead kept them on edge, but so far, the streets were clear.

“Everything seems quiet,” Yeong Do muttered, his eyes darting around, scanning every shadow.

“Too quiet,” Aradhya added, gripping her weapon tighter. “This feels like the calm before the storm.”

Zach nodded, his mind half-focused on their surroundings, but another part of him was back at the mansion with Anastasia. He couldn’t shake the gnawing sense of worry, even though he trusted Mei to keep Anastasia safe.

Yeong Do broke the silence again. “So, Zach, you really think heading out into the countryside is the right call?”

Zach shrugged, scanning a nearby alley before continuing forward. “It’s safer. Fewer people, fewer zombies. We can set up somewhere remote, maybe build a new life.”

“Sounds too simple,” Yeong Do said. “You know it won’t be that easy.”

“Nothing’s ever easy,” Zach replied. “But it’s better than staying in the city. Eventually, this place will be overrun. We won’t survive here forever.”

Aradhya, walking beside them, was quiet for a moment before speaking. “Do you really think there’s a place out there where we can live in peace?”

Zach glanced at her, seeing the hope and doubt battling in her eyes. “I don’t know,” he admitted. “But we have to try. For all of us.”

The weight of his words hung in the air as they turned a corner, only to freeze at the sight before them. A small horde of zombies had gathered in the distance, shambling aimlessly but too close for comfort.

“Shit,” Aradhya cursed under her breath. “That’s a lot of them.”

Yeong Do quickly assessed the situation. “We can’t take them all head-on. We need to find another way around.”

Zach nodded, keeping his voice low. “Let’s backtrack. We’ll find a different route.”

The three of them quietly moved away from the horde, doubling back and slipping through a narrow alley to avoid detection. Every step felt like a calculated risk, knowing one wrong move could attract the attention of the undead.

Back at the mansion, Anastasia and Mei had finished combing through the remaining rooms. They’d found a few old tools, some spare batteries, and a half-empty first aid kit. It wasn’t much, but every little bit helped.

“So, you really think Zach’s the one?” Mei asked as they sat down to take a break, her tone teasing as usual.

Anastasia chuckled, leaning back against the wall. “I don’t know. It’s too early to say something like that, but... I can’t imagine surviving without him now.”

Mei grinned. “You’re lucky, you know. It’s not easy to find someone who’s that loyal.”

Anastasia smiled softly, thinking about how Zach had become her rock in this apocalyptic world. “I know. I think... I think I might actually love him.”

Mei’s eyes widened. “Whoa, that’s big. You haven’t even told him yet, have you?”

“No,” Anastasia admitted, feeling her heart quicken at the thought. “But I want to. When the time’s right.”

Mei raised an eyebrow, her mismatched eyes glinting. “Well, don’t wait too long. In this world, time is a luxury we don’t have.”

Before Anastasia could respond, a sudden crash from the next room startled both of them. They jumped to their feet, weapons drawn, as the sound of footsteps approached.

“Zach?” Mei called out cautiously.

But as the door creaked open, it wasn’t Zach or the others. It was a lone zombie that had somehow found its way inside, its decayed face twisted in hunger.

Anastasia and Mei moved quickly, Mei darting to the side to distract the creature while Anastasia swung her blade with precision. The zombie’s head rolled clean off, hitting the ground with a sickening thud.

Panting, Mei wiped the blood off her blade. “Damn, I thought we cleared this place.”

Anastasia checked the doorway, her heart still racing. “We did. It must’ve found a way in.”

Mei narrowed her eyes, her expression hardening. “Then that means more could be coming.”

Meanwhile, Zach, Yeong Do, and Aradhya had managed to evade the horde and were making their way back toward the mansion. As they approached, Zach’s sense of unease grew. Something felt off. The usually quiet mansion had an air of tension around it, like the calm had been broken.

Yeong Do noticed it too, his eyes narrowing as they neared the front gate. “Something’s wrong.”

They rushed inside, finding Anastasia and Mei standing over the remains of the zombie they’d just killed.

“What happened?” Zach asked, his eyes darting between Anastasia and the corpse on the ground.

“One got in,” Mei answered, still catching her breath. “We took care of it, but we need to check the perimeter again.”

Yeong Do nodded, already heading toward the back door to inspect it. “We can’t stay here much longer if they’re getting in.”

Zach turned to Anastasia, his hand resting on her shoulder. “You okay?”

Anastasia nodded, but Zach could see the worry in her eyes. “Yeah, but this place doesn’t feel safe anymore.”

Zach clenched his jaw, frustration bubbling up. They needed a plan. Somewhere more secure, somewhere they could actually breathe without constantly looking over their shoulders.

Aradhya chimed in, her voice steady. “We can’t afford to stay here. The longer we wait, the more vulnerable we become.”

“I know,” Zach agreed. He looked to the group, a decision forming in his mind. “We’ll pack up and leave at first light. Head for the countryside like we talked about. But we need to move fast.”

Anastasia squeezed his hand, grounding him. “We’ll figure it out. Together.”

Zach looked into her eyes, and for a brief moment, the world outside faded. All he could see was her—her strength, her resolve, and the growing connection between them. He leaned in, pressing his forehead against hers, their breaths mingling in the quiet of the room.

“We’re going to make it,” he whispered, his voice filled with determination.

Anastasia smiled softly, her lips brushing his as she whispered back, “I know we will.”

For now, the group prepared for their next move. The sun would rise soon, and with it, the next chapter of their survival.
