The next morning, the group woke to a heavy silence inside the bunker. Despite the temporary safety, an unease had settled over everyone. Zach stood at the entrance, watching the forest outside, his mind lost in thought. Anastasia joined him, slipping her hand into his.
“Did you sleep?” she asked quietly.
Zach shook his head. “Barely. I keep thinking about what’s next.”
Anastasia leaned into him, her heart still heavy with the weight of their conversation the previous night. “We’ll figure it out. Together.”
Zach glanced down at her, his eyes softening for a moment before hardening again. “I know. But there’s something coming. I can feel it.”
As the group gathered for a quick breakfast, Jungkook began organizing a scouting mission. “Yeong Do and I will check the surrounding area,” he announced, “see if there’s anything useful or any signs of danger.”
Zach nodded. “Be careful. If anything feels off, come back immediately.”
Jungkook smiled, reassuring. “You know me. I’m always careful.”
Aradhya gave him a look, half-smiling, but her concern was clear. She reached out, her fingers brushing against his arm as he stood. “Don’t do anything reckless.”
Jungkook winked at her. “Wouldn’t dream of it.”
As Jungkook and Yeong Do prepared to leave, Mei began organizing the supplies they had scavenged, while Anastasia and Aradhya discussed ways to fortify the bunker further. The tension hung in the air like a storm cloud, as though everyone was waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Hours passed, and the sun began to dip behind the trees, casting long shadows over the bunker. Anastasia grew restless, pacing near the entrance as the minutes dragged on.
“They should’ve been back by now,” Mei said quietly, her brow furrowed with worry.
Zach’s gaze was fixed on the horizon, his instincts buzzing with unease. “Give them a little more time. They might’ve found something.”
Suddenly, the sound of rustling leaves broke the silence. Anastasia tensed, her eyes darting toward the treeline.
Zach grabbed his knife, stepping forward. “Stay back.”
Moments later, Jungkook and Yeong Do emerged from the forest, moving quickly, their faces grim. Something had clearly happened. Zach immediately noticed the blood splattered on their clothes—though neither seemed hurt.
“What happened?” Zach demanded, his voice low but sharp.
Jungkook exchanged a look with Yeong Do before speaking. “We found something... unsettling.”
Anastasia stepped forward, her heart racing. “What do you mean?”
Yeong Do wiped the sweat from his brow, his face pale. “There’s a group... a large one. They’ve been tracking us.”
“Tracking us?” Mei asked, her voice tinged with fear.
Jungkook nodded. “They’re organized. Heavily armed. And... they know we’re here.”
A heavy silence fell over the group. Zach’s jaw tightened, his mind racing through possible scenarios. “How far are they?”
Jungkook’s expression darkened. “Not far. Maybe a day’s walk. We’ve been lucky so far, but they’re moving fast.”
Anastasia’s heart pounded in her chest. “What do they want?”
Yeong Do’s voice was grim as he answered. “They’re not scavengers. They’re a hunting party. And we’re the prey.”
The realization hit everyone at once—this wasn’t just another band of survivors looking for supplies. These people were hunting them, and they wouldn’t stop until they had them in their grasp.
“We need to leave,” Aradhya whispered, fear flickering in her eyes.
Zach’s gaze hardened. “No. We stand our ground. This bunker is the best defense we have.”
Anastasia turned to Zach, worry clouding her green eyes. “But what if they’re too many? We can’t take on an army.”
Jungkook shook his head. “Zach’s right. We stand a better chance here than out in the open. But we need to be ready.”
Zach’s hand tightened on his knife, the weight of the situation settling on his shoulders. He glanced at Anastasia, their eyes locking for a brief moment. They had fought so hard to survive, to find a moment of peace in this hellish world. Now, it seemed like the fight was far from over.
“We’ll be ready,” Zach said, his voice cold and determined.
As the group prepared for what was to come, Zach moved to the bunker’s entrance, his mind a whirlwind of thoughts. He had felt this darkness creeping closer for weeks now. Something was coming for them, something unstoppable.
But as he stood there, staring out into the darkening woods, something else caught his attention. A flicker of movement in the trees.
His breath hitched.
A figure.
Tall, shadowy... and unmistakably human.
His heart skipped a beat as the figure stepped forward into the fading light, revealing itself. A man, cloaked in tattered clothes, with eyes that glowed eerily in the twilight.
And those eyes... they were blue.
“Zach,” Anastasia called softly from behind him, unaware of what he was seeing. “What’s wrong?”
He turned to face her, his mouth dry, but before he could speak, a chilling voice echoed from the woods, cutting through the air like a knife.
“I found you.”
Everyone froze.
Zach’s blood ran cold as the figure stepped closer, its face now fully illuminated by the dim light of the setting sun.
It wasn’t just a man.
It was a monster.
And it wasn’t alone.
Behind it, dozens of figures emerged from the shadows, their eyes glowing just like the first, their movements unnaturally slow and methodical. A shiver ran down Zach’s spine as he realized these weren’t ordinary people—they were something else, something far worse than the undead.
Anastasia’s hand gripped his arm, her voice barely a whisper. “Zach... what are they?”
Zach’s heart pounded in his chest as he stared at the growing horde, their glowing eyes locked on the bunker.
“I don’t know,” he whispered back, his voice thick with dread. “But they’re coming.”
The group had thought they were safe. They had thought the worst was behind them. But as the first of the glowing-eyed figures stepped toward the bunker, a new nightmare began to unfold.
And this time, not all of them would survive.
