Shadows of the past

The journey was brutal.

Jungkook led the group deeper into the forest, following trails and roads that had been long abandoned. The tension was palpable—Anastasia’s mind kept racing, thinking about Zach, wondering if they were getting closer to him. Mei stayed by her side, offering support, but even she couldn’t hide her own worry.

As they ventured further, the quiet of the forest gave way to the familiar growls and snarls of the undead. They had been tracking the mysterious blue-eyed stranger for days, but now, they found themselves in increasingly dangerous territory.

“Get ready,” Jungkook whispered as he stopped suddenly, his eyes scanning the horizon. “We’re entering a hot zone.”

Ahead, in the distance, they saw it—a horde. The streets were littered with zombies, their decayed bodies aimlessly wandering, searching for prey. The group slowed down, their weapons ready.

“We can’t go through them,” Yeong Do said, shaking his head as he eyed the mass of undead. “Not without losing someone.”

Anastasia’s heart sank as she took in the scene. There were too many of them, and she wasn’t ready to give up on their mission. “Is there another way?”

“There,” Jungkook pointed towards a large, crumbling factory that stood like a monolith in the distance. “We can take shelter in that building. It’ll give us cover for the night.”

“Are you sure?” Aradhya asked, her hand gripping Jungkook’s arm. “It could be dangerous.”

Jungkook glanced at her, his dark eyes steady. “I know. But it’s our best shot right now.”

As they approached the factory, the air felt colder, more oppressive. The building towered above them, its windows shattered, and rust covered every inch of the metal. It was clear no one had been here for years, not since the outbreak.

The group moved quickly, avoiding the zombies as best as they could, and slipped into the factory through a broken side door.

Once inside, Anastasia and Mei scanned their surroundings, their weapons raised. The interior was dark and eerily quiet. The stench of decay was everywhere, and the walls were covered in grime and old bloodstains.

“This place gives me the creeps,” Mei muttered, her grip on her knife tightening.

“I don’t like it either,” Aradhya added, her eyes darting around nervously. “We need to be careful.”

But as they stepped deeper into the factory, something strange caught their attention. Bodies—piles of them, strewn across the floor. Zombies, but they weren’t moving.

“They’re... dead?” Yeong Do said, his voice filled with confusion as he nudged one of the corpses with his foot. “But how?”

Anastasia crouched down next to one of the fallen zombies, examining the scene. Each body bore the same signs of trauma—sliced throats, deep stab wounds, and broken bones. Whoever had done this had been precise, methodical.

“Someone’s been here,” Jungkook murmured, his eyes narrowing as he took in the scene. “Recently.”

“It has to be him,” Anastasia whispered, her heart racing. “It has to be Zach.”

Mei knelt beside her, her eyes wide. “But how? There are so many of them, and... they’re all dead.”

“Maybe it wasn’t just him,” Yeong Do suggested. “Maybe he had help.”

Anastasia shook her head, her mind whirling with memories of Zach. She knew him—knew what he was capable of. If he had changed, if he had become the ruthless zombie slayer Jungkook described, it wasn’t impossible that he had done this alone.

“There’s no way someone else did this,” Anastasia said, standing up. “It’s him. I can feel it.”

Jungkook exchanged a glance with Aradhya, who had stayed close to him since they arrived. She could see the doubt in his eyes, but there was also a quiet understanding.

“If it’s Zach, then we’re closer than we thought,” Jungkook said, his voice low. “But we need to stay alert. Whoever he is now... he’s dangerous.”

Aradhya placed a hand on Jungkook’s arm, her eyes softening as she spoke. “We’ll find him. And we’ll bring him back.”

Anastasia’s heart clenched at the thought. She had no idea what Zach had been through since they left him behind, but she knew one thing—she wouldn’t give up on him. Not now.

“Everyone stay close,” Jungkook ordered as he led them further into the factory. “We’ll find a place to rest, but we can’t let our guard down.”

As the group explored the factory, the eerie silence made them all uneasy. Every creak of metal, every distant groan of the undead outside, set their nerves on edge.

They finally found a large room near the center of the building, mostly intact and free from any obvious danger. With nightfall approaching, they set up camp there, resting their exhausted bodies against the cold concrete walls.

Anastasia sat apart from the others, staring into the darkness, her mind filled with thoughts of Zach. Mei sat beside her, gently squeezing her arm.

“We’ll find him, Ana,” Mei said softly. “I know we will.”

“I hope so,” Anastasia replied, her voice barely above a whisper. “But what if he’s not the same?”

Mei didn’t have an answer, and neither did Anastasia. The Zach they knew and loved might be gone, replaced by the mysterious figure Jungkook had described.

As they sat in the silence, the weight of the moment pressing down on them, Jungkook quietly walked over and sat next to Anastasia. His presence was grounding, though she could feel his worry too.

“I’ve seen a lot of things out here,” Jungkook said, his voice soft but steady. “People change. But sometimes, they come back.”

Anastasia glanced at him, her green eyes filled with uncertainty. “Do you think he’ll come back to me?”

Jungkook was silent for a moment before he finally answered. “If he’s anything like the man you’ve described... then yes. I think he will.”

As they sat in the abandoned factory, surrounded by the ghosts of the past, Anastasia felt the tiniest flicker of hope reignite within her. Maybe, just maybe, they would find Zach—and maybe he would come back to her.

But deep down, she knew that whatever they found, it would change them all forever.
