The growls grew louder, their eerie echoes bouncing off the cold steel walls of the bunker. Zach and Jungkook exchanged tense glances, both ready to fight whatever new horror was closing in. Mei huddled closer to Aradhya, her knuckles white from gripping her weapon tightly, while Yeong Do stood like a silent sentinel, watching the hallway with grim determination.
Anastasia took a step closer to Zach, her hand brushing against his arm. “Do you think it’s more zombies?” she whispered.
“I don’t know,” Zach replied, his voice low and steady. “But whatever it is, it’s different.”
Suddenly, a loud bang rattled the walls, followed by a series of rapid footsteps echoing down the hallway. The sound wasn’t human. It was quicker, more animalistic, and that sent a fresh wave of fear through the group.
“Everyone, stay close!” Jungkook ordered, pulling Aradhya behind him protectively.
The door at the far end of the hall burst open, and a flood of shadows poured in. For a brief moment, all Zach could see were dark shapes moving with incredible speed, weaving in and out of the dim light. Then the creatures stepped into view, and his heart stopped.
They were zombies, but not like the ones they’d encountered before. These were faster, leaner, and their eyes glowed faintly in the dark—feral, ravenous beasts driven by something more than just hunger. They were hunting as a pack.
“Get ready!” Zach shouted, raising his weapon. “Aim for the head!”
The first of the creatures lunged toward them with terrifying speed, but Zach was faster. He fired, the bullet hitting the zombie square between the eyes. It collapsed, but another was already on its heels, snarling and snapping its teeth as it charged.
Anastasia moved in sync with Zach, her reflexes sharp as she swung her weapon at the next attacker. “They’re too fast!” she yelled, dodging a swipe from a clawed hand.
“They’re adapting,” Jungkook growled, slamming a creature into the wall with brutal force. “We need to retreat and regroup.”
Mei, trembling but brave, managed to shoot one of the creatures in the leg, causing it to stumble. “There are too many of them!” she cried out, backing up toward the control room.
“We can’t fight them all here!” Yeong Do said, taking down two more with expert precision. “We need to move!”
Zach’s mind raced as he fought off another zombie, his thoughts flickering to the growing danger they were facing. These creatures weren’t just mindless—they were organized, and the pack was far larger than they could handle.
“Fall back to the main room!” Zach shouted, ushering Anastasia toward the others. “We’ll make a stand there.”
The group hurried back into the control room, slamming the heavy door behind them. For a moment, there was silence, broken only by their labored breathing. But the growls outside the door didn’t fade. They were still out there, waiting, clawing at the walls like wolves stalking their prey.
Anastasia turned to Zach, her green eyes wide but steady. “Zach, what do we do now?”
Zach looked around the room, his mind racing for a solution. He couldn’t let these creatures overrun them. Not after everything they’d been through. And then, an idea struck him—one he didn’t like, but one that might just give them a chance.
“I’m going out there,” he said, his voice calm but firm.
Anastasia grabbed his arm, her grip tight. “No. You can’t go out there alone.”
“I have to,” Zach replied, meeting her gaze. “I can control them. Maybe not all of them, but enough to give us a chance to escape. If I can turn some of them against the others, we might be able to make it out.”
Anastasia shook her head, her voice breaking slightly. “You’re putting yourself in danger again. I can’t lose you, Zach.”
“You won’t lose me,” he said softly, cupping her face in his hands. “I promise. But we don’t have time. I have to do this.”
Their eyes locked, and for a moment, the world seemed to slow down. Zach leaned in, his lips brushing against Anastasia’s in a tender, lingering kiss. It was full of all the words they didn’t have time to say—the love they had for each other, the fear of what might happen next, and the hope that somehow, they would survive.
“Come back to me,” Anastasia whispered as they pulled apart.
“I will,” Zach promised, his voice steady. “I’ll always come back to you.”
With one final glance at the group, Zach turned and headed for the door. Jungkook, Yeong Do, and Aradhya stood ready to cover him, their faces grim but resolute.
“Good luck out there,” Jungkook said quietly, his respect for Zach clear in his tone.
Zach nodded, taking a deep breath before opening the door and stepping into the dark hallway. The growls intensified as the creatures sensed him, their glowing eyes narrowing with predatory intent. But Zach’s own blue eyes flashed with a fierce determination.
He raised his hand, focusing on the connection he’d discovered with the zombies. It was like tapping into a primal force, one that he still didn’t fully understand but had learned to control. Slowly, he reached out with his mind, commanding the nearest zombies to stop.
The creatures hesitated, their glowing eyes flickering as if caught in a battle between instincts and Zach’s influence. Then, one by one, a few of them began to turn, snarling at their fellow pack members. It wasn’t much, but it was enough.
“Go!” Zach shouted over his shoulder to the others. “Now!”
The group didn’t need to be told twice. Jungkook led the charge, with Yeong Do and Aradhya close behind. Mei clung to Anastasia’s arm, both of them glancing back at Zach as they made their escape.
Zach stood his ground, holding the creatures at bay as long as he could. His body trembled with the strain of controlling so many at once, but he refused to let them break through.
As the last of his friends disappeared down the hall, Zach released his hold on the pack, turning and sprinting after them. The remaining zombies snarled in fury, but their confusion bought him just enough time to reach the exit.
When he finally caught up to the group outside the bunker, Anastasia was waiting for him, her eyes filled with relief.
“You did it,” she breathed, pulling him into her arms.
Zach held her tightly, his heart pounding in his chest. “We’re not safe yet,” he whispered, but for now, in her embrace, he felt like he could survive anything.
