"Mr. Young, are you interested in Greek mythology too?" Sofia exclaims when she sees a book named ALCESTIS in my father's hand.
We just finished dinner and were preparing to leave. But now it seems that we need to delay our exit.
Dad smiles at her fondly, just like he smiles at Jo, before replying, " Yes, I find Greek mythology fascinating. Alcestis is one of my favorite tragic heroines. And please call me Kai from now on."
One positive shift is that Mom and Dad had begun considering Sofia as a part of our family, inviting her to stay longer and join in on our meals and gatherings.
"Alcestis is a favorite of mine too. Mind if I take a look at the play?" Sofia asks, her eyes lighting up with curiosity.
Dad nods eagerly, and Sofia takes a seat beside him , flipping through the pages of the book. I may have picked up Latin and books after my dad, but Greek mythology is just not my thing.
"I always wonder why Alcestis never spoke after returning back. She must have said something upon seeing her husband again after coming back from dead if she loved him to a great extent. She was willing to sacrifice her life for him." Sofia muses , her brow furrowed in thought.
My eyes stray to the blue diamond earrings glinting on her ears, which were a gift of mine. I remember the way her eyes lit up when she first saw them, a smile spreading across her face. I remember the way she kissed me passionately that night, her love for me shining through in every touch.
"What is your theory, sweetheart?" Dad asks Sofia, with a serious expression as if they are discussing a business deal rather than a stupid mythological play.
To my surprise, Sofia returns the serious expression, her eyes narrowing as she formulates her response. "I believe that Alcestis was too stunned to fully comprehend what was happening to her. I mean to her, it seemed that she has sacrificed her life, and to see the living world again could be both a blessing and a curse," Sofia explains, her voice steady and confident.
Dad nods in agreement, impressed by her insight. "That's an interesting perspective, but I would think Alcestis is angry and sad upon returning."
"I understand she could be angry because she never expected her husband to give her away so easily, but why the hell would she be upset to be alive again?" Sofia asks increasingly, her brow furrowed in confusion. "Wouldn't she want to be reunited with her loved ones and continue living?"
From there, they delve into a deep discussion about the complexities of Alcestis' emotions and motivations, exploring the nuances of her character and the impact of her sacrifice on those around her. Sofia's analytical approach to literature impresses Dad, sparking a thought-provoking conversation.
Mom comes up from behind me at smirks at both of them leaned together , saying, "Don't you dare make her a bookworm too, Kai."
"Interesting. Aren't you an author yourself, love?" Dad smirks without looking up from the book while Sofia points out some lines to him.
"I write them; I don't read them," Mom replies with a playful wink.
"I wouldn't like it if you start reading Dino Erotica when I'm here, love." Dad counters, and Sofia also looks up from the book, her cheeks turning pink, and I would be lying if I didn't like that hue.
Mom rolls her eyes dramatically, "He is jesting, Sofia."
"Trust me, I am not," Dad says.
Sofia's phone buzzes with a text, and she types something back quickly.
