Title: "The Night We Couldn't Ignore."
Summary: A little secret between you Steve's little sister and his bestfriend Bucky.
The old Brooklyn apartment was dimly lit, filled with the warmth of shared memories. Steve had gone to bed hours ago, leaving Bucky and Y/n, his little sister, lounging on the worn-out couch. The television was on, some late-night talk show playing in the background, but neither of them was really paying attention.
As usual, Bucky was teasing her, poking fun at the way she insisted on making faces whenever she was thinking too hard.
"You always do this thing," Bucky chuckled, leaning over to lightly tap Y/n's forehead. "Like you're trying to win a staring contest with yourself."
Y/n playfully slapped his hand away, narrowing her eyes at him. "I do not! You're just jealous I have more going on up here than you do," she quipped, pointing to her head with a smirk.
Bucky laughed, that deep, warm laugh that made Y/n's heart skip a beat every time. He always had a way of getting under her skin, making her laugh when she didn't want to, and somehow making her feel like she was the only person in the world when he looked at her.
They'd been like this for as long as Y/n could remember-constantly teasing, constantly bickering, but always close. There was an ease between them that came naturally, as if they were magnets that couldn't help but pull toward each other.
But lately, something had changed.
The jokes still flowed, the teasing still came, but there was a tension now-an unspoken thing that hung in the air between them, too thick to ignore. Every time Bucky brushed his hand against hers, every time their eyes locked for just a second too long, Y/n felt it. And she knew Bucky felt it too.
Neither of them ever talked about it, though. It was too risky, too complicated. He was Bucky Barnes, her brother's best friend, the guy who'd seen her grow up. And yet, here they were, playing a game neither of them had the guts to call out.
Tonight, though, something was different. Maybe it was the way Bucky had been looking at her all night-like he was waiting for something. Or maybe it was the way Y/n felt her heart race every time he leaned in a little too close.
Whatever it was, the tension had reached its breaking point.
Bucky sighed, leaning back against the couch, his arm draped lazily over the back. "You know," he started, his tone more serious now, "I don't know how I've put up with you for this long. You're a menace."
Y/n rolled her eyes but smiled, nudging him with her elbow. "You love it, admit it."
Bucky raised an eyebrow, glancing over at her. "Oh yeah? And what if I do?"
Y/n's smile faltered for a second, her heart skipping in that familiar, dangerous way. She searched his face, expecting to see the usual glint of playfulness in his eyes, but there was something else there. Something deeper. Her pulse quickened.
"Buck..." she said softly, suddenly feeling unsure of herself.
He didn't respond at first, just kept looking at her, his expression unreadable. The teasing atmosphere from earlier had disappeared, replaced by a heavy silence. Bucky leaned forward slightly, his eyes flicking down to her lips for just a split second before meeting her gaze again.
The air between them crackled with tension.
Y/n felt her breath hitch, her mind racing. Was this it? Was this the moment they finally stopped pretending?
"Y/n," Bucky said quietly, his voice low, "I'm done playing games."
Her heart hammered in her chest. "What are you saying?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Bucky hesitated for just a moment, as if he was weighing the consequences of what he was about to say. Then, he leaned in closer, his face just inches from hers, his breath warm against her skin.
"I'm saying," he murmured, his voice rough around the edges, "that I've been hiding how I feel about you for a long time now. And I'm tired of pretending it's just goofing around."
Y/n's heart stuttered in her chest as the words sank in. She stared at him, wide-eyed, her mind struggling to catch up.
"Bucky, I..." She trailed off, feeling her cheeks flush. The teasing, the glances, the little moments-it had all meant something. All this time.
Bucky reached out, gently tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear, his touch lingering on her cheek. His blue eyes were soft, almost vulnerable in a way she wasn't used to seeing from him.
"You don't have to say anything," he whispered, his thumb brushing lightly against her skin. "But I need you to know... I care about you, Y/n. More than I should. And I can't keep pretending that I don't."
Y/n swallowed hard, her emotions a whirlwind inside her. She had always known there was something between them, but hearing him say it out loud-seeing the way he looked at her-it was overwhelming.
She took a shaky breath, her hand moving to rest on his chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart beneath her palm. "I care about you too, Buck," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "I've been trying to deny it, but... I can't anymore."
Bucky's eyes softened, his lips curving into a small, relieved smile. "You have no idea how long I've wanted to hear that."
Before Y/n could respond, Bucky closed the distance between them, his lips brushing against hers in a slow, tender kiss. It was soft at first, tentative, as if they were both testing the waters, but then it deepened, becoming more urgent, more real.
Y/n's hand slid up to his neck, pulling him closer as she kissed him back, pouring every unspoken feeling into the moment. It was everything she had imagined and more-every bit of tension, every bit of longing, finally released.
When they finally pulled apart, both of them were breathless, their foreheads resting against each other as they caught their breath.
"Wow," Y/n whispered, her lips still tingling from the kiss. "That was..."
Bucky chuckled softly, his hand still cupping her cheek. "Yeah, it was."
They stayed like that for a moment, just holding each other, both of them feeling the weight of what had just happened. It was a long time coming, but now that the truth was out, there was no going back.
"What do we do now?" Y/n asked softly, her voice tinged with both excitement and uncertainty.
Bucky smiled, his thumb brushing lightly against her cheek. "Well," he said, leaning in to press a soft kiss to her forehead, "we figure it out. Together."
Y/n smiled, her heart feeling lighter than it had in a long time. "Together sounds good."
And as they sat there, wrapped in each other's arms, the weight of their unspoken feelings finally lifted, they knew that whatever came next, they'd face it together-no more games, no more pretending.
