It had been a whirlwind of a day, and as you stepped into the dimly lit kitchen, you weren't surprised to see Bucky sitting there, a quiet figure with his back turned, the golden light from the small window casting a warm glow over his silhouette. You paused in the doorway, noticing the tension in his shoulders, the subtle heaviness in his posture. He didn't hear you enter, too lost in thought, so you cleared your throat softly.
"Bucky? You okay?" you asked, gently stepping forward.
He glanced over his shoulder, his face softening as he recognized you. There it was—that warm, familiar look he'd given you since the two of you were practically kids, though these days, it had started to mean something more. Or maybe you were imagining it. You couldn't tell.
"Hey, Y/n," he greeted with a small smile. "Just... thinking."
You took a seat across from him, resting your arms on the table. "Thinking about the mission, or just... life?" You gave him a teasing smile, trying to coax something lighter out of him.
"Bit of both, I guess," he said, chuckling softly as he ran a hand through his hair. "Feels like I'm always on edge."
You studied his face for a moment, noticing the tiredness in his eyes. Bucky had been through so much, and you admired him for how strong he had stayed, but it broke your heart a little too, knowing he carried so much weight on his shoulders. "Well, you know," you started, your voice soft and almost shy, "you don't have to do everything alone. You have Steve... and me."
He looked at you, something in his gaze shifting, becoming almost tender. "I know. You've always been there, even when I wasn't always... easy to be around."
"Oh, trust me," you teased, leaning back in your chair, "you're still not easy to be around."
That earned a laugh from him, his shoulders relaxing slightly. "I see how it is," he replied, smirking. "You just put up with me because Steve asked you to, huh?"
You shook your head, chuckling. "Well, maybe that was part of it at first, but..." You hesitated, feeling a warmth in your cheeks that you hoped he couldn't see in the dim light. "But I'd put up with you even if Steve wasn't around, Bucky. You're... kind of special to me."
The air seemed to grow thicker between you two, and he stared at you, his blue eyes searching yours. "You're special to me too, Y/n. Have been for a long time."
Your heart thudded, your breath catching. You couldn't believe it—was he saying what you thought he was?
"Y/n," he said, reaching out and hesitantly placing his hand on yours, his thumb brushing gently against your skin. "I... I don't want to mess this up, whatever it is between us. But I think... I think I've felt this way about you for longer than I can admit."
You swallowed, feeling an overwhelming rush of emotions you'd tried so hard to keep in check. "You don't have to hold back, Bucky. I've been waiting... for you to see me like this."
His gaze softened even more, a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "You waited?"
"I did," you whispered, giving his hand a light squeeze. "But you're here now, and that's all that matters."
In the quiet that followed, he leaned forward, his free hand reaching up to gently tuck a stray piece of hair behind your ear. His touch was so soft, so warm, it felt like he was finally allowing himself to be vulnerable with you, to trust you.
"Then I don't want to wait anymore," he murmured.
Slowly, he leaned in, his lips brushing yours in a gentle, tentative kiss, as if savoring every moment.
You felt warmth blossom in your chest, your heart racing as you kissed him back, feeling like you'd finally found something you'd been looking for all along.
His hand slipped from yours, moving to cup your cheek as he deepened the kiss, the two of you finally, finally giving in to everything you'd held back for so long.
When you broke apart, breathless and a little giddy, you looked up at him, your heart full and your head spinning.
"What about Steve?" you asked, a playful smirk crossing your lips. "You know he's going to give you hell for this."
Bucky chuckled, running a hand through his hair. "Let him. I think I can handle it." He held your gaze, his eyes warm and filled with a happiness you hadn't seen in him for a long time. "You're worth it."
You smiled, feeling a warmth you hadn't felt in ages settle in your chest. You'd waited a long time for this, for him, and you knew without a doubt that he was worth it too.
