The Stark Tower gleamed against the night sky, its iconic arc reactor light beaming brightly into the crisp New York air. Inside, the penthouse was transformed into an elegant New Year's Eve celebration, with glittering decorations and the hum of jazz music setting the tone. Avengers and close friends mingled, dressed in their finest, champagne glasses in hand as they shared stories of victories, memories, and hopes for the year ahead.
Y/N Stark adjusted her sequined gold dress, feeling the weight of her father's watchful eyes from across the room. Tony Stark, ever the overprotective father, leaned against the bar with a drink in hand, his gaze flicking between Y/N and the man standing a few feet away from her—Bucky Barnes.
The tension between Y/N and Bucky had been brewing for years, an electric undercurrent neither had dared to fully explore. Every look, every banter-filled conversation was loaded with unsaid words. And while Tony had made his disapproval abundantly clear, Y/N's mom, Pepper, had always known better.
"Your dad's glaring at me again," Bucky muttered, sidling up beside Y/N as she stood near the window overlooking the city.
She smirked, not looking away from the glittering skyline. "When isn't he?"
Bucky chuckled softly, the sound low and warm. "True. Think he'd notice if I snuck out of here?"
"Oh, he'd notice," she teased, finally turning to face him. "But don't worry. I'd vouch for you."
"And who's vouching for you?" Bucky asked, his blue eyes meeting hers.
Y/N felt her breath catch, the weight of his stare making her heart race. She was saved—or cursed—by the sound of Tony clearing his throat loudly behind them.
"Barnes," Tony said sharply, stepping between them. "Care to explain why you're lurking near my daughter?"
Bucky straightened, his hands in his pockets, a picture of calm. "Just having a conversation, Stark."
"Uh-huh," Tony said, his tone dripping with suspicion. "Remember the conversation we had about... boundaries?"
Y/N rolled her eyes. "Dad, really?"
Pepper appeared beside Tony, placing a calming hand on his arm. "Tony, let them be. It's New Year's Eve."
Tony turned to his wife, incredulous. "You're seriously okay with this?"
Pepper smiled knowingly. "I trust our daughter. You should too."
Tony grumbled something unintelligible but relented, retreating toward the bar while Pepper gave Y/N a wink.
The party continued, laughter and chatter filling the room as the countdown to midnight grew closer. Steve and Natasha were deep in conversation by the fireplace, while Thor regaled Bruce and Sam with tales of Asgard. Peter darted around excitedly, taking selfies with everyone, while Shuri and Wanda discussed tech and magic in the corner.
Y/N found herself standing by the dessert table when Bucky approached again, this time with a determined look.
"Dance with me," he said, holding out his hand.
Her brows shot up. "Here? With everyone watching?"
He shrugged, his lips curving into a smirk. "Scared?"
"Hardly," she shot back, taking his hand.
The makeshift dance floor wasn't exactly crowded, but the pair drew more than a few curious glances as they swayed to the music. Y/N couldn't help but notice how perfectly her hand fit in Bucky's, the warmth of his touch juxtaposed against the coolness of his vibranium arm.
"You really don't care what my dad thinks, do you?" she asked, tilting her head up to meet his gaze.
"Not when it comes to you," he admitted, his voice soft but firm.
Her cheeks flushed, and for once, she was at a loss for words.
As the clock approached midnight, the room buzzed with excitement. Tony, ever the showman, stepped up to the front with a microphone.
"Alright, folks! It's almost time. Grab your champagne and someone to kiss—if you dare," he added, shooting a pointed look at Bucky.
Bucky grinned, unfazed, as he turned to Y/N. "What do you say? Feeling daring?"
Her heart pounded, but she nodded. "Let's do it."
The countdown began, the room erupting in cheers as everyone counted down from ten.
"Three... two... one!"
Cheers and laughter filled the air as couples kissed, friends hugged, and confetti rained down from above.
Bucky didn't hesitate, his hand slipping to Y/N's waist as he leaned in. The kiss was everything they'd both imagined—soft yet intense, a culmination of years of longing and unspoken feelings.
When they finally broke apart, Y/N's face was lit with a radiant smile.
"Happy New Year, Barnes," she said breathlessly.
"Happy New Year, Stark," he replied, his forehead resting against hers.
From across the room, Tony groaned dramatically. "Pep, I'm going to need more champagne if this is what I have to deal with next year."
Pepper simply laughed, raising her glass. "Here's to a new year full of surprises, Tony."
As the party continued, Bucky and Y/N stayed close, sharing quiet moments amidst the chaos. And for the first time in a long time, the future felt as bright as the fireworks lighting up the New York sky.
