"Title: Beneath the surface."

Summary: Bucky teaches you swimming.

The sun was setting, casting a warm glow over the compound. Y/n had come to enjoy the tranquility of the Avengers' home, even if she felt a little out of place among such extraordinary beings. She was sitting by the pool, watching the ripples of water dance as the wind played with the surface.

Despite her awe of the sprawling complex, there was one thing she dreaded: swimming. The memories of nearly drowning when she was younger still haunted her, making the mere thought of being in water terrifying. However, she never let anyone know how afraid she was. Instead, she put on a brave face, determined to enjoy the day.

Bucky Barnes, on the other hand, was enjoying a rare moment of downtime. He approached the pool, towel draped over his shoulder, ready to take a dip. As he stepped closer, he noticed Y/n sitting at the edge, her feet dangling in the water, lost in thought.

"Hey, Y/n," he greeted, his voice deep and soothing. "Mind if I join you?"

Y/n looked up, her heart racing at the sight of him. "Um, sure. Just don't splash me too much, okay?" she replied, trying to keep her tone light.

Bucky chuckled, diving into the water. He resurfaced, slicking his hair back, the sun glistening off his chiseled features. Y/n couldn't help but admire him, even as a hint of nervousness bubbled inside her.

Suddenly, a loud laugh from the other side of the pool distracted her. Turning her head, she didn't notice the edge of the pool and lost her balance. Before she could react, she slipped and fell into the deep end with a splash.

Panic shot through her as she flailed in the water, struggling to find her footing. Bucky, noticing the commotion, quickly swam toward her. "Y/n! Hold on!" he shouted, reaching out to grab her.

In a heartbeat, he pulled her to the surface, her face spluttering as she gasped for air. Bucky's grip was firm yet gentle, his eyes filled with concern. "Are you okay?" he asked, ensuring she was steady.

Y/n nodded, but she felt the embarrassment wash over her. "I-I'm sorry! I didn't mean to-"

"Don't be sorry," he interrupted, his voice calming her. "Let's get you out of here."

Once they reached the edge, he helped her out of the pool, concern etched on his handsome face. Y/n shivered, water dripping from her hair as she tried to catch her breath.

"You know, you should probably learn how to swim," Bucky suggested, his tone teasing but serious. "It could save you from future splashes."

"I don't think that's going to happen," Y/n replied, wrapping her arms around herself, feeling small and vulnerable.

"Hey," he said softly, stepping closer. "I'll teach you. It'll be fun, I promise."

Y/n looked up, surprised. "You would do that for me?"

"Of course," he replied with a smile. "But only if you promise to trust me."

She hesitated but then nodded slowly. "Okay, I promise."

Over the next few weeks, Bucky devoted time to teaching her how to swim. Each session began with him demonstrating basic strokes and techniques while Y/n watched, absorbing his every move. Despite her fears, she began to look forward to their time together.

"Remember to breathe," he reminded her one day as they floated in the shallow end. His hand was steady on her back, guiding her through the motions. "Inhale when your head is out of the water, exhale when you're under."

Y/n took a deep breath and tried, but panic still gripped her. "I can't do this, Bucky! I'm going to drown!"

He turned her to face him, his gaze intense yet gentle. "You won't drown, I promise. I'm right here. Just relax and trust me."

With those words, she felt a strange comfort wash over her. They practiced tirelessly, with Bucky's unwavering encouragement slowly chipping away at her fears. Each time she swam a little farther, her confidence grew, and with it, a budding connection between them.

One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden hue over the water, Y/n finally swam across the length of the pool without his help. She emerged triumphant, gasping and laughing, her heart racing not just from the exertion, but from the thrill of the moment.

"I did it! I really did it!" she exclaimed, her face lighting up with joy.

Bucky's smile was radiant, his pride evident. "You were amazing, Y/n! I knew you could do it."

As she turned to face him, their eyes locked, and in that moment, the world around them faded away. She felt an undeniable chemistry in the air, a spark that ignited something deep within her. Before she realized it, she took a step closer, heart pounding.

"Thank you, Bucky," she whispered, her voice barely above a breath. "For everything."

He reached out, brushing a wet strand of hair behind her ear. "You don't have to thank me. I'm just glad you're safe."

Y/n could feel the warmth radiating from him, a comforting presence that made her pulse quicken. "No, really. You've helped me more than you know," she said, her voice steadying as she took another step closer.

Bucky's expression softened, and he moved closer, the tension between them palpable. "You've come a long way, Y/n. I'm really proud of you."

With her heart racing, she leaned in, her lips brushing against his in a soft, tentative kiss. The world around them melted away, and for a moment, it was just the two of them, floating in a sea of newfound feelings.

Bucky pulled back, his blue eyes sparkling with surprise and warmth. "Wow," he breathed, a grin spreading across his face. "I didn't see that coming."

"Neither did I," Y/n admitted, her cheeks flushing. "But it felt right."

"Yeah, it really did," he said, his voice low and filled with promise.

As they stood there, the pool shimmering under the moonlight, Y/n knew this was just the beginning. With Bucky by her side, she felt ready to face any challenge, both in and out of the water.

Together, they were ready to dive into something beautiful.
