It's dark as I step out of the club. My two best girl friends and I all giggle as all three of us nearly fall over. We were having the best time of our lives. Tonight was Jenny's birthday. You only turn 23 once. And we were living it. Chloe had been buying the drinks and I got dinner. Now, it was time for us to wind down and head home.
"The Uber is on the way," I tell them as we stand at the corner of the street.
"Y'all are my bestest friends," Jenny says.
"Awe girl, you're our bestest too," Chloe tells her.
"We love you," I shout out.
"I love you, Yasmin." She tells me to kiss my lips.
I look up at the ski. It was a full moon tonight. The stars were beautifully twinkling, and there was a gentle breeze.
A white sedan pulls up in front of us, "Yasmin Brooks." The Driver says.
"Yes, just take them I'm going to walk tonight," I tell him.
"No, Yasmin that's not safe," Jenny says.
"It'll be fine, I just need some fresh air." I tell her, "Happy birthday, Jenny."
I hug her neck and make sure she and Chloe are both in their seats and give the driver their destination before paying and closing the door for them.
"Call me as soon as you get home" Chloe says.
"As soon as I get home," I tell her.
"Be careful out there, it's all Hollows Eve people get crazy." The driver tells me.
"Thanks," I tell him, "take care of my friends," I tell him.
He nods and starts away. I head away from the club we had been at. I needed some time for myself. Two years ago today, my mom passed, and every year, while it gets a little easier, I still need time to reflect.
I walk along the sidewalk taking my time. I wasn't in any hurry tonight there was nowhere I had to be. There were a lot of others out tonight as well. Doing early trick or treating. I hear the sound of children laughing and parents talking.
I hear some behind me but think nothing of it. They are all around tonight. I keep my pace, smiling at a little girl and her dad who walk by me. She wears an Annabelle costume, and it looks so cute on her.
"A beautiful woman shouldn't be walking alone at night." A deep husky voice says behind me.
"Yeah, will, are you gonna kill me because there are others around that might see you?" I tell him.
"I'm just a stranger warning another about her safety. Maybe I'll walk with you keep you safe." He says.
I smile, "Do you work with the police?" I ask.
He cackles, and I find it a trun on for some reason "hardly, I'm what the police are warning you to stay away from." He tells me.
"But yet you're here to protect me."
"Only because I don't like others stalking my prey." He says, and I saw he's right behind me.
I stop hearing him stop too. I look behind me, and no one is there. I squint my eyes in the dim light of the lamp post that lights up the neighborhood.
"Are you scared to show yourself," I ask out loud.
I didn't get an answer, thinking he simply went away, I turned back and started walking again.
"I don't want to frighten you." His voice is still as husky as before.
I still for a moment, then continue, "Are you messed up or something?" I asked.
