Her POV
I was young when my mom and dad decided they no longer wanted to be a family. They separated for a while and then later got a device. For a while, a long while, it was just my mom and I we would places and visit fun parks. Dad got vistion rights, and then I started going up there every other weekend. Then it was every other week. My mother remarried three years after their device to a man named Steven. He was nice, he came with two children of his own Donna and Daniel they were twins and did everything together. Even played together, they liked to be alone together and never really invited me into their space to play with them or hang out with them. Even when we got older, they would keep to themselves and do stuff together. Mom said that it was natural for them being twins. I thought it was wired because they were always together. I think they even took showers together. I never once saw them apart from the other one.
But my troubles did start with them. It wasn't until I was fourteen and my dad met Molly and they got married. With Molly came her fifteen year old son Adam. I remember the day I came home after we first met. I sat down at the kitchen table to talk to my mom about him.
"He doesn't like me, mom," I tell her.
"I'm sure it'll all change over time," mom says.
"He picks on me," I tell her, "calls me names and makes fun of me."
She just smiles. "He's just being a boy, honey. After a while, it'll wear off."
I don't think she knew how wrong she would be. It didn't wear off. it only got worse. The name calling and then came the physical touching. When I would try to tell anyone about it, they would say he would grow out of it. But when I didn't see him ever growing out of it.
Adam was my worst nightmare, and I had no choice but to put up with him. My dad had mandatory custody of me, so I was stuck.
Three days after my sweet sixteen, I was at dad's house. Adam wasn't in sight, so I thought maybe he was at his dad's this week, and I could finally have a week free of him.
I had the TV on watching reruns of NCIS. In my pajamas, which is nothing more than a tank top and some losses pants. My feet up on the couch as I pop some popcorn into my mouth.
Dad and Molly were gone out tonight. Something they like to do to keep the romance alive, they say.
I heard the door in the kitchen open but don't move. It could be anyone. This house was like a store. Everyone came in and out all the time. My father didn't care. Even the guy across the street came in unannounced, and dad didn't say anything.
The next thing I know is a big backpack was being tossed onto the couch. I still don't move.
"Where's my mom?" Adam asked as his black head popped around the corner.
I look up at him. "Her and dad went out," I tell him simply right, I thought so.
"Where to"
"I don't know, I didn't ask."
"How can you not ask where they are going?" he asked. He ran a hand through his hair.
"Ease, I don't care to know where they go on their romantic dates," I say.
He sits down at my feet, grabbing for the popcorn I have been eating .
"Hey," I say.
"Shear, little girl," He says.
I throw some at him as he takes the whole bowl. Popping some into his mouth. I go back to watching the TV trying to ignore him. Until he grabs the remote.
