As the last of the guests made their way out, the evening slowly began to settle down. Aarav had already left, promising to visit again soon, and the two sets of grandparents had enjoyed the celebrations to the fullest. Their laughter and conversations still echoed in the house as they retired to their respective rooms, leaving Anuj and Anupama alone in the quiet afterglow of the party.
Anuj stood by the door, his hands resting on the frame, gazing out into the night. His mind was preoccupied with thoughts of Aarav. He couldn't shake off the image of the young boy—so confident and composed, always so polite with Aadhymaan. But it wasn't just that. It was how much he seemed to mean to Aadhya, and how quickly she had grown up. Anuj had always thought of his children as his little babies, but today, something had shifted. Aadhya was no longer just his little girl; she was blossoming into a young woman with her own desires, her own crushes—and maybe even her first love.
Anupama watched her husband from a distance, her heart heavy with empathy. She knew what was going through his mind. She'd been in his shoes before when Aadhya was growing up, but now, with Aadhymaan, she understood the feeling even more acutely. It was hard to let go, to watch them grow independent. But she also knew that, like Aadhya, Aadhymaan would need to find his own path, make his own friends, and one day—much sooner than they realized—become more independent.
Quietly, Anupama approached Anuj. She could see the weight of the emotions he was holding inside. Without saying a word, she took Aadhymaan from his arms, who was fast asleep. She smiled softly at her son before whispering to him, "It's time for bed, little one."
Anuj stepped aside, watching as Anupama gently carried their son into his nursery. She changed him into his onesie, humming a soft lullaby under her breath. Aadhymaan cooed in his sleep, his tiny hand clutching her finger as she laid him down in his crib. Anupama stood there for a moment, watching him peacefully sleep, before quietly leaving the room and closing the door behind her.
She walked across the hall to Aadhya's room. The door was slightly ajar, and she could hear soft giggles as Aadhya chatted with her friends, still on the phone even though the party had ended. Anupama knocked lightly on the door, stepping inside. Aadhya looked up, her face lighting up at the sight of her mother.
"Hey, Mom," Aadhya said, putting the phone on speaker mode for a moment.
Anupama sat on the edge of her daughter's bed. "Hi, sweetheart," she said softly. "How are you feeling? Enjoying your birthday?"
Aadhya beamed, nodding. "I loved it, Mom. Everything was perfect, especially the surprise from Aarav." She paused, biting her lip in excitement. "I think he liked me, too."
Anupama smiled, feeling her heart swell with pride for her daughter. "You're growing up so fast, Aadhya," she said, her voice full of emotion. "And I know you're starting to have feelings for someone special."
Aadhya's cheeks flushed a little. "It's just... I really like him, Mom. He's kind, funny, and he really understands me."
Anupama's heart ached as she thought about how her daughter was stepping into this new chapter of life. She gently reached out and took Aadhya's hand, squeezing it. "I'm glad you've found someone who makes you happy, sweetheart. But just remember, it's important to be true to yourself. And always come to me if you need advice."
Aadhya nodded, squeezing her mother's hand back. "I know, Mom. I promise I will."
Anupama stood up and kissed her daughter on the forehead. "I love you, my dear. And I'll always be here for you, no matter what."
"I love you too, Mom," Aadhya replied, her voice soft and sincere.
As Anupama walked out of Aadhya's room, she couldn't help but feel a mix of emotions—pride, joy, and a little sadness too. Her daughter was growing up, and that was something she had to come to terms with.
She made her way back to the master bedroom where Anuj was sitting on the bed, looking lost in thought. The lights were dimmed, and the room was quiet, but Anupama could feel the heaviness in the air. Anuj's mind was still elsewhere, thinking about Aarav and his daughter.
She walked over to him, sitting beside him on the bed. "Anuj," she said softly. "What's going on in that mind of yours?"
Anuj didn't reply immediately. Instead, he let out a heavy sigh. "I just... I don't know, Anu. Seeing Aadhymaan with Aarav today... it made me realize that time is passing by too quickly. First, Aadhya grows up right before my eyes, and now Aadhymaan... it feels like they're slipping away from me, even though they're still so young."
Anupama put her hand on his, offering comfort. "Anuj, you're not losing them. They're growing up, yes. But that doesn't mean they're leaving you. They'll always need you. They'll always be our babies, no matter what."
Anuj nodded slowly, but there was still a sadness in his eyes. Anupama could feel the pain in his words. "I just don't want to lose them, Anu. I know I sound silly, but I don't want Aadhya to be someone else's. And I don't want Aadhymaan to grow up too fast."
"I understand," Anupama whispered, hugging him tightly. "But you know what? Aadhya is a grown-up girl now. And we've talked about this before. She deserves her privacy and her own space to make decisions. And as for Aarav, he seems like a nice boy. He's respectful, well-mannered, and makes her happy. You need to trust her. And you need to trust yourself as a father. You've done well by her so far."
Anuj wiped his eyes and pulled away from her embrace. "But I still need to have a conversation with her... and with Aarav."
Anupama smiled, her heart lightening. "We'll talk to them tomorrow. But remember, they're both growing up. And that's not a bad thing."
Anuj nodded slowly. "I guess you're right. We'll talk to them tomorrow."
He stood up from the bed, stretching as he headed toward the bathroom. "I think it's time to change and get some rest. We've had a long day."
Anupama watched him for a moment, her heart full of understanding. When he came back from changing, they both climbed into bed together. The cool sheets wrapped around them, and the quiet of the night settled in.
Anuj pulled Anupama close, resting his head on her shoulder as they both drifted off to sleep. The weight of the day had lifted, but tomorrow would bring new conversations, new challenges, and perhaps new realizations. But for tonight, they were together, and that was enough.
