The days following Aadhya's birthday party settled into a tense routine for Anuj and Anupama. The initial shock of Aadhya's burgeoning relationship with Aarav morphed into a constant undercurrent of stress that neither of them could shake. While Anuj struggled to reconcile his protective instincts with his daughter's newfound independence, Anupama found herself caught in the middle, trying to bridge the widening gap between her husband and their daughter. It was a Tuesday evening, and the house buzzed with activity as Sushma and Madhav prepared dinner in the kitchen, their laughter and banter filtering through the open door. Anuj was sitting at the dining table, absently scrolling through his phone, lost in thought. The only thing that broke the silence was the soft coos of Aadhymaan, who was happily playing with a rattle nearby. Anupama entered the room, her demeanor cheerful, but the tension in the air was palpable.
"Anuj, can we talk for a minute?" she asked, her voice steady.
He looked up, his brow furrowing. "About what? Is it Aadhya again?"
"Of course it is," Anupama replied, crossing her arms defensively. "We need to discuss how to handle her relationship with Aarav."
Anuj's expression hardened. "You think we should just sit back and let her run wild with this boy? She's only fourteen, Anupama!"
"That's exactly the point! She's growing up. We can't just dictate her life. We need to guide her," Anupama retorted, her patience fraying.
"Guide her?" Anuj scoffed. "What's there to guide? He's just a boy! What if he breaks her heart?"
"Anuj, she's not a child anymore. You can't keep treating her like one," Anupama shot back, her voice rising. "If you don't start trusting her, she'll just pull away from us."
The argument escalated, with both of them shouting over each other, their voices echoing through the house. Aadhymaan let out a startled cry, which only added to the tension. Sushma and Madhav exchanged worried glances, their lighthearted conversation dying in their throats.
"Enough!" Anuj shouted, slamming his hand on the table. "I can't believe you're taking her side! She's my little girl, and I have a right to be protective."
"And I'm her mother! I want to be supportive," Anupama replied, tears of frustration welling in her eyes. "You're pushing her away, Anuj. Can't you see that?"
"I'm trying to keep her safe! You're the one who's being naive!"
The shouting match reached a fever pitch before it abruptly fell silent. Anuj, chest heaving with anger, turned away from Anupama, the words hanging thick in the air like a storm cloud.
The sound of footsteps approached as Sushma and Madhav entered the room, clearly having overheard the commotion. Their expressions were a mix of concern and confusion.
"What's going on here?" Madhav asked, looking between the two with a stern frown.
Anupama opened her mouth to explain, but Anuj cut her off. "Just a disagreement about Aadhya and her boyfriend."
"Aarav," Anupama added quickly, hoping to clarify the situation.
Sushma sighed, stepping closer. "Now, now, there's no need to shout. You're both just worried about Aadhya, and that's understandable. But shouting isn't going to solve anything."
"We need to set some boundaries," Anuj insisted, crossing his arms. "She's too young to be dating."
"And what do you think dating means? It's not like they're getting married," Anupama snapped back, her frustration boiling over. "It's normal for teenagers to explore relationships."
