The following morning, Anupama woke up to a persistent buzzing sound. She rubbed her eyes, squinting against the bright light filtering through the curtains. Her heart raced as she recalled the remnants of her nightmare from the previous night. It felt too real, too ominous.
She glanced at Anuj, who was already up and moving about the room, packing his briefcase for an unexpected business trip. He was engrossed in a phone conversation, his brow furrowing with concern. Anupama felt her heart sink as she watched him, a feeling of dread tightening around her chest like a vice.
Anuj hung up the call and turned to her, his expression serious. "Anupama, I just got off the phone with the client. I have to leave for Jaipur today," he said, his voice steady but carrying an undercurrent of tension.
"Jaipur? Today?" Anupama asked, her voice rising slightly. "But you weren't scheduled to leave! Is it really necessary?"
He ran a hand through his hair, a gesture that always signaled he was stressed. "Yes, it's urgent. They need me to finalize the project details. I'll only be gone for a couple of days. You know how important this client is to us."
Anupama nodded, but the unease wouldn't dissipate. "Okay, but please be careful. I just have this bad feeling about this trip," she said, her voice laced with concern.
"Bad feelings? Anupama, it's just a business trip," Anuj reassured her, but she could see the flicker of worry in his eyes. He stepped closer, cupping her face in his hands. "I promise I'll call you as soon as I arrive. Everything will be fine."
As Anuj continued to pack, Anupama's mind raced. The previous threats, the looming darkness, the shadows that had haunted her dreams—everything felt interconnected. What if this trip was more dangerous than he realized?
She watched him finish packing, her stomach twisting as he zipped up his briefcase. "You'll call me, right?" she pressed, needing the assurance that he would be safe.
"Of course," he replied, a reassuring smile gracing his lips. But it didn't reach her heart. There was something in his tone that left her feeling unsettled.
The door clicked shut behind him, and Anupama stood by the entrance, watching his retreating figure. The silence that enveloped her home was deafening, filling her with an uneasy sense of foreboding. She fought back tears, her heart heavy with worry. What if something happened to him? What if this trip wasn't just a simple business meeting?
The day dragged on, each minute feeling like an eternity. Anupama tried to distract herself with household chores and preparing meals, but nothing could shake the feeling of impending doom that settled in her gut. The phone rang around midday, startling her. She grabbed it, hoping it was Anuj, but the number was unfamiliar.
"Hello?" she answered cautiously.
"Anupama," a low, gravelly voice said on the other end. "You should be worried about Anuj."
Her heart dropped, fear lacing through her veins. "Who is this? What do you want?" she demanded, her voice shaking.
"I'm just saying... watch your back. He's in danger. And if he goes through with this trip, you might not see him again."
The line went dead, and Anupama dropped the phone, her breath coming in short gasps. Panic surged within her as she fought to regain her composure. She had received anonymous letters and threats before, but this felt different. This felt real.
She grabbed her phone and tried to call Anuj, but her hands trembled so badly she could barely dial. After several attempts, she finally got through. The phone rang endlessly, but there was no answer. Anxiety clawed at her insides.
