The sterile, clinical silence of the hospital room felt heavier with each passing day. Anuj lay still, hooked up to machines that beeped and hummed softly, reminding everyone that he was still with them, though silent and far away in his coma. Anupama hadn't left his side for days. Her eyes were swollen, her face drawn and pale from sleepless nights spent waiting, hoping for a miracle. The light in her eyes, the warmth she radiated, was slowly being consumed by exhaustion and fear.

Meera sat beside her, watching her daughter-in-law as she fought to stay awake, her hand clinging to Anuj's. Meera's heart ached for Anupama; she could see the toll this was taking on her. She could see the grief, the fear, and the love etched into Anupama's every feature.

"Anupama, beta," Meera whispered softly, her voice thick with concern. "You need to rest. It's been days... you can't go on like this."

Anupama shook her head stubbornly, her gaze never leaving Anuj's face. "Maa, I... I can't. What if he wakes up and I'm not here? What if..." Her voice cracked, and she choked back a sob. She couldn't bear the thought of Anuj waking up alone, scared, confused. She needed to be there, to hold his hand, to be the first face he saw when he returned to her.

Meera's heart broke as she watched her daughter-in-law struggle. Gently, she placed her hand on Anupama's shoulder, guiding her to lie down with her head resting on her lap. "Shh, it's okay. Just close your eyes for a little while. I'm here. I'll watch over him, I promise."

Anupama hesitated, but her body was betraying her, too exhausted to resist. Slowly, she let her head rest on Meera's lap, and Meera began to stroke her hair soothingly. The gentle rhythm of Meera's hand, the warmth of her touch, finally allowed Anupama's eyes to close. The exhaustion took over, and she drifted into a troubled sleep.

But even in her sleep, peace eluded her. Her mind was trapped in a nightmare, dark and suffocating. She saw Anuj surrounded by shadows, calling out for her, his voice weak and desperate. She tried to reach him, but every step she took pulled her further away, as though the shadows themselves were holding her back. She watched helplessly as Anuj's figure faded, leaving only darkness behind.

"Anuj!" she screamed, bolting upright, gasping for air as if she had been drowning. Her chest heaved, and her hands shook uncontrollably. She clutched at her heart, feeling it race, pounding so hard it hurt.

Meera immediately wrapped her arms around her, soothing her in a gentle, motherly embrace. "Shh... it was just a dream, beta. Just a nightmare. Anuj is right here. He's with us," she whispered, her voice steady and comforting.

Anupama's breathing began to slow, her heart still heavy with dread as she looked at Anuj's unconscious form. She reached out, touching his hand, needing to feel the connection, the warmth, anything that would reassure her he was still with her. Her fear lingered, but Meera's touch calmed her enough to stop her trembling.

Just then, Rajesh entered the room. He had gone to get some coffee, hoping a brief moment away would help him gather his own emotions. But the sight before him, his wife holding a broken Anupama, his son lying in that terrible stillness, brought a fresh wave of sorrow crashing over him. He walked forward, his usually calm demeanor cracking as he placed a hand on Anupama's shoulder.

His voice shook, betraying the depth of his pain. "Anupama... Meera... I never thought... I never thought we'd see our boy like this." He wiped a tear away, his hand trembling. "He's always been so full of life, so strong..."

Anupama looked up at him, her own face wet with fresh tears, and she placed a reassuring hand over his. "He's strong, Papa. He'll come back to us. He has to."

Rajesh nodded, though his heart was breaking. He admired Anupama's resilience, her unwavering faith. It gave him a sliver of hope, something to cling to in this nightmare.
