As the night wore on, the laughter slowly settled into a comfortable quiet. Anuj, still smiling from his over-the-top performance, finally managed to convince Anupama to take her medicine. Aadhya had gone to her room, and Aadhymaan, exhausted from all the excitement, had fallen asleep in Anupama's arms.
Anupama gently placed Aadhymaan in his crib, her fingers brushing over his soft hair. The baby stirred slightly but stayed asleep, his tiny chest rising and falling peacefully.
Anuj stood by the door, watching them quietly. His heart was heavy with a mix of emotions—guilt, love, and something he couldn't quite place. He had been so caught up in their fights lately, so consumed by his frustrations and fears, that he'd forgotten what really mattered. Seeing Anupama with their children, laughing, playing—he realized just how much he had missed the small, precious moments. And how much he had been hurting her without realizing it.
Anupama, still unaware of Anuj's quiet turmoil, turned to him, her face softening as their eyes met. "That was quite the performance, Mr. Kapadia," she whispered, her voice tired but laced with affection.
Anuj walked over to her, sitting down on the edge of the bed. He reached out and took her hand gently, his thumb brushing over her knuckles. "I just... I wanted to make you laugh. You've been so stressed. We both have." His voice was low, almost like he was afraid to say what he really felt.
Anupama's eyes softened, but there was still a shadow of weariness there. She smiled faintly, nodding. "I needed it, Anuj. We all did."
A silence settled between them, not uncomfortable but heavy with unspoken words. Anuj stared down at their intertwined hands, the warmth of her touch grounding him, but the weight of their unresolved issues hung in the air.
"I'm sorry, Anu," he whispered, his voice breaking slightly. "For everything. I know I haven't been the best husband lately. I've been... angry, and I haven't handled it well. I haven't handled us well."
Anupama stayed silent, her gaze dropping to the floor. She didn't need to say anything—he could see the exhaustion in her eyes, the toll their fights had taken on her. The physical and emotional weight of it all.
"I know you're still recovering," Anuj continued, his voice thick with guilt. "And I should have been more understanding. Instead, I've only made things harder for you. I've been selfish."
Anupama squeezed his hand, but the exhaustion on her face told him she was too tired to fully process his apology right now. She leaned back against the headboard, her eyes closing for a moment as if trying to gather the strength to respond.
"Anuj," she said softly, "I don't want to fight anymore. I'm too tired. I just want some peace... for both of us, for the kids."
Her words, though gentle, hit him like a punch to the chest. She wasn't angry anymore—she was just worn out. He'd taken her to the edge, and she was breaking under the pressure.
Anuj felt a lump in his throat, tears welling up in his eyes. He hated himself in that moment, hated that he'd let things get so bad. He had failed to see how much she was struggling, how much she had been carrying on her own.
"I love you, Anu," he whispered, his voice trembling. "I'm so sorry I didn't show it enough. I was so caught up in my own head, in my own fears, that I didn't see how much you needed me."
Anupama opened her eyes and looked at him, her gaze soft but distant. "I know you love me, Anuj. I never doubted that. But love isn't enough sometimes. We need to understand each other, support each other." She sighed, her voice breaking slightly. "And lately... it feels like we're not even on the same page."
Her words stung, but Anuj knew they were true. They had been drifting apart, caught in their own worlds of frustration and pain. He had been so focused on protecting his daughter, on controlling every situation, that he had forgotten how to be her partner. Her equal.
Anuj wiped his eyes, taking a deep breath. "You're right. I haven't been there for you like I should have been. But I want to be, Anu. I want to fix this."
Anupama gave him a tired smile, but it didn't quite reach her eyes. "I want that too, Anuj. But it's going to take time. We've both hurt each other. And I need time to heal... not just physically, but emotionally too."
Anuj nodded, understanding the weight of her words. He reached out and gently cupped her face, his thumb brushing away a tear that had escaped down her cheek. "I'll give you that time, Anu. I'll give you whatever you need."
They sat there in silence for a few moments, the weight of their conversation hanging between them. But this time, the silence wasn't filled with tension—it was filled with a quiet understanding, a mutual acknowledgment of their struggles.
Just then, Aadhymaan stirred in his crib, letting out a soft whimper. Anupama started to rise, but Anuj stopped her gently.
"I've got him," he said, his voice soft but firm. "You rest."
Anupama hesitated for a moment, then nodded, sinking back into the bed. Anuj stood up, walking over to the crib and carefully picking up their son. Aadhymaan squirmed in his arms for a moment, but then settled, resting his head against Anuj's chest.
Anuj looked down at the baby in his arms, his heart swelling with love and regret. This was his family, his world—and he had almost lost it because of his own pride.
He walked back to the bed, sitting down next to Anupama as he cradled Aadhymaan. He watched her for a moment, her eyes fluttering shut as exhaustion finally claimed her. He leaned over and pressed a soft kiss to her forehead, whispering, "I love you, Anu. We'll get through this. I promise."
Anuj stayed there, holding Aadhymaan close as he watched his wife sleep. And for the first time in a long while, he felt a glimmer of hope—hope that they could heal, that they could find their way back to each other.
But deep down, he knew it would take more than just words. It would take time, patience, and a lot of love. And he was willing to give her all of that. For as long as it took.
