Two months had passed since that chaotic evening, and Aadhyamaan was now eight months old—bigger, louder, and much more of a handful. His once quiet, curious nature had morphed into something far more mischievous. He had become the center of attention, but not always in the way everyone hoped.
This particular morning started like most others. Anuj woke up early, eager to prepare for the day ahead. He had an important meeting at the office, and Anupama, always up just a bit before him, was busy tidying the kitchen while making sure everything was ready for breakfast. The calmness of their routine was shattered, however, by the shrill sound of Aadhyamaan's cries from the nursery.
"He's up," Anupama sighed with a tired smile, wiping her hands on a dish towel. Anuj groaned in reply, tossing the blanket off and heading towards the nursery.
Anuj scooped up the squirming baby, cradling him gently. "Morning, champ. Ready to conquer the day?"
But it seemed Aadhyamaan wasn't in the mood to conquer anything. His face scrunched up as he wriggled in Anuj's arms, letting out small whimpers that quickly escalated into full-blown fussiness.
By the time they made it back to the living room, the two sets of grandparents had arrived. Aadhya, was already glued to her spot on the couch, watching her YouTube shorts on the tv, her attention flicking towards her baby brother occasionally. Malvika, ever the doting aunt, arrived shortly after, her presence as lively as always.
"He's been fussing since last night," Anupama explained, gently rubbing the baby's back. "I don't know what's gotten into him."
As if to punctuate her point, Aadhyamaan let out an ear-piercing wail, catching everyone's attention.
"Oh, give him here," Malvika offered, reaching out her hands. "I have the magic touch."
Aadhyamaan was handed over, but instead of calming down, he tugged at Malvika's long ponytail, gripping it tightly with his tiny fists.
"Ouch! You little monkey!" she laughed, trying to gently pry his fingers from her hair. "I take back what I said! This one's on you, big brother."
Aadhya burst into laughter from the couch. "He's on a hair-pulling spree!"
It wasn't long before both sets of grandparents joined in the effort to pacify him. One by one, they tried their best—rocking him, singing lullabies, bouncing him up and down—but every attempt ended the same. Little Aadhyamaan, with a mischievous grin, yanked at their hair, much to everyone's frustration. His tiny but determined fingers didn't spare anyone—except for Anuj and Anupama.
"Okay, I'm done. Someone else take him," Aadhya exclaimed dramatically, rubbing her head after a particularly painful pull.
Anuj, now visibly frustrated, handed Aadhyamaan to Anupama. "I'm going to get ready for work. I'll let you handle the hair-pulling monster."
But as soon as Anuj turned his back to leave, Aadhyamaan started wailing again, this time louder than before. The sound grated on his nerves, making Anuj stop in his tracks.
"Not today, champ. I've got a big meeting!" he muttered, adjusting his shirt collar as he rushed to the bedroom to get dressed.
But Aadhyamaan had other plans. No sooner had Anuj entered the bedroom than the baby crawled after him, his little hands and knees moving faster than expected. "You've got to be kidding me," Anuj sighed, his expression torn between frustration and amusement as Aadhyamaan clutched at his pants, refusing to let go.
"You're not going to make this easy, are you?" Anuj bent down, picking him up with a resigned smile. "What do you want, huh? You want to come to work with me?"
Anupama entered the room, her arms crossed but a playful smirk on her face. "Looks like he doesn't want to say goodbye today. He's attached to you—literally."
Anuj kissed the top of Aadhyamaan's head and handed him back to Anupama. "You win this round, little one. But I really have to go."
Anupama waved him off with a knowing look. "Don't worry, we'll survive without you for a few hours."
Finally, Anuj made his way out the door, waving one last time to his son. As the door closed behind him, Aadhyamaan stopped fussing, almost as if the entire episode had been some elaborate scheme to keep his father around.
With Anuj gone, Aadhya decided to take on the challenge of entertaining her baby brother. She set him down in front of the TV, scrolling through the channels until she found a bright, animated cartoon. The moment the colors danced across the screen, Aadhyamaan's eyes widened with curiosity.
"See? Easy peasy," Aadhya said confidently as she sat beside him, her arm draped casually over the back of the couch.
The baby giggled, bouncing happily in place as he watched the characters move across the screen, seemingly forgetting all the fuss he'd made earlier.
Anupama, watching from the doorway, shook her head with a soft chuckle. "Maybe we should just hire Aadhya as a full-time nanny."
"I'm amazing," Aadhya responded with a grin, grabbing a rattle to wave in front of Aadhyamaan.
The two siblings spent the next hour in blissful peace—Aadhya occasionally showing him new toys, while Aadhyamaan cooed and babbled along with the television.
By the time Anuj returned from work, exhausted but satisfied with how the day had gone, he walked in to find the living room peaceful once more. Aadhyamaan was fast asleep in Aadhya's lap, his tiny hands wrapped around her shirt, his chest rising and falling with each quiet breath.
Anuj smiled at the sight, the earlier frustration already forgotten. "So, how was it?"
"Piece of cake," Aadhya whispered, careful not to wake the sleeping baby. "He's not so bad when you know how to handle him."
Anupama laughed softly, leaning her head on Anuj's shoulder. "Guess that's the trick—letting Aadhya handle him."
Anuj kissed the top of Anupama's head. "Noted. Next time, we'll just leave her in charge."
As they stood together, watching their two children in that rare moment of calm, Anuj couldn't help but feel a swell of pride. The chaos, the noise, the hair-pulling—it was all worth it for moments like this.
