Abandoned in NYC

no ordinary day

Olivia woke with the sun shining through the window over her headboard and her alarm on her cell going off loudly near her. She groaned and sat up putting her robe around her and tying it at the waist as she stood and made her way to the kitchen from her bedroom. She started a pot of coffee and poured a bowl of cereal for her son Noah. She set the bowl by a stool at the island counter and walked towards her sons room gently opening her sons door and walking in pulling out his outfit for the day and walked over shaking her son away softly. "Time to get up buddy, time for school."

Noah smiled waking up "ok mama." He said and stood rubbing his eyes.

She left him to dress and she went to her room to dress for the day. She emerged from her room several minutes later fully dressed for another day of work and seen her son pouring milk in his cereal and dumping some on the counter "woah Noah you got to be careful bud." She said grabbing a rag to clean it up.

"Sorry mommy" he said biting his lip.

Olivia ruffled his hair and kissed his forhead "it's ok just take it slower next time."

She had a bagel while her son ate his cereal. After they ate she helped him with his jacket and backpack and said "ok kiddo let's go before we are both late huh." She smiled and left the apartment with her son.

She walked him to school and gave him a kiss and hug and said "Lucy will be here to get you after school and I'll video chat with you once your home ok?"

"Ok mama bye!" He yelled and ran to his friends and teacher.

Olivia smiled watching him a moment then looked at her watch and headed to work.

Olivia walked in to the svu squad room and said "morning guys I come bareing more coffee grounds." She announced as fin laughed and said "please tell me it's not that hazelnut crap again?"

"You want something else you buy the coffee next time" Olivia smiled and shook her head at her right hand man and Sargeant fin. "So anything new on the subway groper?"

"Just that he struck again this morning the woman thought she could ID him but all we got was this useless sketch. Non descript white male blue baseball cap and brown leather bomber jacket." Kat said showing her the sketch.

"Ok so Kat and fin you two go talk to the other victims see if it jogs anything for them." Olivia said and then walked to her office.

She sat at her desk and put her bag away as a knock came to the door and amanda peeked her head in "hey liv there is something you should see out here".

Olivia thought maybe it was something to do with the case but when she came out of her office she found a desk officer standing next to a young brunette girl with a backpack and an envelope clenched in her hands. "What's this?" Olivia asked the officer.

"Sorry captain Benson this girl walked up to the front desk and asked to see you I asked where her mother was she said she was outside and when I escorted her out I saw a dark blue midsized car speeding off around the corner so I thought I should bring her to you." The officer said and olivia nodded and let him go.

Olivia knelt down in front of the girl and said "hi there I'm captain Benson but you can call me Olivia what's your name sweetheart?"

"Madelyn" she said shyly.

"Hi Madelyn. Why did you need to see me?" She asked softly.

"Mommy said I had to come in and give you this letter but then mommy left....why did mommy leave?" Madelyn asked.

"You know sweetie I'm not sure but can I take the letter from you?" She asked and Madelyn slowly handed her the envelope she had been clutching. Olivia looked at Kat and said "Kat can you take Madelyn to get a snack and a juice from the lunchroom please."

Kat nodded and took Madelyn towards the lunch room.

Olivia stood and opened the envelope and read a letter.

Dear Ms. Olivia Benson,

You do not know me but we do have a connection. In 1980 my mother was raped by a man named Joseph Hollister. I found out through some research that your mother was as well back in 1968. I have read many articles saying what a wonderful police officer you are and I can no longer protect myself or my daughter. I have decided to end my own life in a last chance hope to protect my daughter from my ex boyfriend. I know this is a huge undertaking but I hope that my daughter will find a protector in you. In the envelope you will find Maddies birth certificate, social  security card and a transfer of guardianship. Please take care of my sweet girl.

Olivia was in shock as she looked over everything and reread the letter.

"What is it liv?" Amanda asked.

"Apparently I have a sister and she's given me guardianship of her daughter so she can go end her life and wants me to protect Madelyn." She said not believing her own words.
